Seriously Sears?

Okay, so I found this quite comical.  Yesterday I received a letter in the mail from Sears about my credit card.  I got the card 5 years ago when I bought my treadmill and did the 0% interest thing.  That was the first and last time I used it.  Well yesterday I received a threatening letter in the mail from them that if I did not use my credit card by March 1st, they would decrease my credit limit from $4,000 to $250.
So I called the 800 number and told them to close my credit card out completely and that I would never do business with them again because of their threatening letter about my lack of use for their credit card.  The lady on the phone told me that she ran my credit and would increase my limit to $10,000 to satisfy me.  Um, #1 I did not ask you to run my credit, #2 I haven't used the card in 5 years and you magically think giving me an extra $6k on my credit limit is going to make me go out and charge things to the card.  I told her again that I would never do business with them again because of this and to close out my card.
She transferred me to the "manager."  Who explained to me that they will deactivate my account until I'm ready to use it again.  All I have to do is swype my card.  Lady, I don't even have the card.  It was shredded years ago.  Close out my account!
She transferred me to the "manager" (thought I was already speaking with one), which explained that they would close out my account and I should be receiving confirmation within the next few weeks.  Then she had the nerve to ask why I wanted to close this out.  Well lady, lets see.  I don't use it, we don't use credit any more no matter what the circumstances, the card was shredded over a year ago, you sent me a threatening letter, then you ran my credit score without even asking, then you offered to "satisfy me" by increasing my credit limit to some insane amount, and you offered to just suspend my account rather than actually close it out.

This makes me wonder how many people go out and make some random purchase at Sears just to keep their credit card active.

Re: Seriously Sears?

  • Jeez, that is craaaazy stupid!!
  • Wow that is stupid. And I would be kissed about them running my credit. You didn't have permission for that b.

  • How stupid. I used to work at Sears, and I hated how our customer service in store was. We were required to ask each customer 3 times if they wanted to open a sears card. I got written up for forgetting to ask one customer in front of a manager...

    lame  sauce

  • Sears is pretty evil. I've gotten those letters in the past. At the time I did go buy something because I was super-paranoid about my credit, but I like Land's End so it was no big deal. Next time I'll just ignore it.
  • That's ridiculous! My mom used to have a credit card with Sears when I was younger and I remember they gave her a hard time with a lot of stuff too. She was so happy to close that account.

  • The most ridiculous thing Sears ever did to me was try to sell me "credit card insurance" for about $3 a month that would pay my bill if I had a job loss or medical emergency. Seriously!? Even pre-MM I saw right through that one!
  • I got the same letter. I shredded it too. Crazy how they treated you!
