  • Can I join you ladies?  I'm formerly AprilH81 and my Bump and Knot accounts are all messed up/locked out/deleted when I asked for my Bump account to be deleted.

I received a PCOS diagnosis today, which is not unexpected but overwhelming at the moment.  I'm sure I'll figure it out but right now I just feel like I have a lot of questions.

No big plans for Valentine's Day.  DH is giving blood Saturday morning, we are going out for lunch and then avoiding the crowds by staying home for dinner.  We have a family birthday party on Sunday.

I'm sorry about the diagnosis. It's never fun :( Just take it one day and one question at a time! <3

Thanks guys!  I had enough of the symptoms at various points in my life that this isn't a shock but it is still disappointing and overwhelming when faced with making all the changes I need to make.  I know I can do it though!

DH was a doll when I sat down to explain what I had and what it caused.  The PCOS combined with the severe Vitamin D deficiency explains many things, but maybe the key issue is my constant fatigue and lethargy.

We both agreed that we would give it a few months trying the diet, exercise and Vitamin D regiment before seeking other treatment options.  I'm still waiting to see if I am insulin resistant, if I am that might complicate matters a bit more but we can handle it.

I'm really excited that DH agreed that we could purchase a high end rowing machine.  It is one of the few exercises that I look forward to but couldn't justify the expense to purchase our own and I dropped my gym membership a year ago because I couldn't find the time to go.

I found the newer version of the rower I want used on Amazon (cosmetic defects) that saved us almost $200.  I can't wait until it is delivered!

We want out for breakfast this morning and will run errands together in the afternoon. I'm going to make myself some martinis tonight. It's just like any other day. Except I have gorgeous flowers on the kitchen island.

  • It's totally up to us. There is a small chance we could get a call about a baby who has already been born or a birth mother in labor who chooses us. We will probably get a crib, PNP, and car seat soon so we are somewhat prepared. PB kids said we can change the due date on a registry of we want to register now. I'd rather have things picked out for OUR baby and so we don't attach sentiment once we're matched on the off chance it falls through.

My mom said that she and my dad will call my ILs and my sister to prep our house once we are out of state for birth. We feel very supported!

  • @seahorse1 - Very exciting! Hopefully, the next step goes smoothly and quickly! Getting closer :)

@AprilZ81 - Welcome over here too, unfortunately... There are some super smart and supportive ladies with PCOS here, so feel free to ask those questions!

@ILoveRedVino - You can do this!!! House hunting sucks big time, but I hope you guys find something perfect quickly!

@poppies717 - Love that you are so supported. The right birth mom and baby will come along soon, I'm sure of it. You guys are going to be great parents!

AFM - Last week, which I think I already shared, RE found a 45mm cyst on each ovary (hemorrhagic/poss corpus luteum cyst on right; clear cyst on left). I had my annual "well-woman" eval this past week, and per my GYN, the cyst on right seems to be gone, but the one on my left was still there and possibly even bigger (50-60mm) per palpation (and boy, did that hurt!). Since that visit, my stomach has been very bleh and mildly crampy. Not sure if that means anything, but I'm hoping it means that the cyst has ruptured, and the discomfort is just the added free-fluid in my abdomen from the cysts. I'll be heading back to RE in the next week or two for a repeat scan to see where we are.

QOTW - No V-day plans for us. DH went and hung out with his BFF for most of the day, and I had work to do. I did manage to get my errands and laundry done though, so I can just relax the day away tomorrow for a change. DH is on his way home now, and we are probably going to order pizza and watch  few more episodes of The Killing.

Happy Valentines Day to all of you!   :-*

    Hi,
Been TTC since July 2012. I've had irregular periods since I stopped taking BC (2007), so I knew we would have TTTC. In 2013, my GYN recommended my DH have a SA to rule out other problems. That is how we found out he had low sperm count and motility/morphology problems. His urologist then prescribed Clomid for 3months and then 3 more.  His count only improved by 1,000 :( so we were referred to RE. On the visit to RE we also found out I had PCOS (that being the cause of my irregular and prolonged periods). Deciding to work on my DH first, our RE changed his prescription from Clomid to Femara and warned us that his current numbers only made us candidates for IVF. Other options would only be available if the count improved. After 3 months taking Femara his numbers went from 800,000 to 10,000,000. RE told us that we were now candidates for AI
:D. Imagine our excitement!!! We were both given Femara to start the process. DH to improve count a little more and me to grow follicules. I went to have a follow up US today and RE told me my follicules hadn't grown to desired size. Has this happened to any of you? He now decided to change prescription to Clomid and if that doesn't work by Friday (when I go for another US), I'll have to start on injections. have any of u used these before? What are the side effects? Costs? Have they been succesful?

I'm just so upset, all this time dealing with DH and now that we were given hope I have to deal with this.

  • Welcome, @FLY106... Sorry that you find yourself here. I've taken Clomid with IUI unsuccessfully a total of 4 times over the years. Although my issue is different from yours, I completely understand your frustration with meds and your body not doing "what they're supposed to".

As far as your questions about injectable meds.. Cost is going to depend on your insurance. If you have to pay 100% OOP, count on it costing at $2,000-$3,000 at least, each cycle. I've used injectables for IVF (not IUI), and we managed to get 5 mature eggs but only 2 embryos to transfer. Again, my issue is different from yours, so hopefully, some of the other ladies on here with PCOS will chime in about their experiences.

Side effects seem to vary with everyone, but the most concerning thing to watch out for is OHSS. Here's more info about that for you to check out: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ovarian-hyperstimulation-syndrome-ohss/basics/definition/con-20033777.

  • Welcome @FLY106 ! I have PCOS and annovulatory cycles. I did 4 rounds of clomid where I only responded to 2. I moved to injectables with femara and did 6 iuis.

The injectables, like @FutureMrsWright2012 said, vary on what your insurance will cover. In my experience, I have found totally out of pocket costs are about $1 per cc. If you get a 400 cc pen of follistim, it's around $400ish.

My issue was over responding on the injectables and I usually had 3-7 mature follicles. You will be bloated, but as long as you are being closely monitored for OhSS, you should be ok.

I did get severe OHSS with my IVF cycle, but was treated quickly and only spent one day in the hospital. We retrieved 36 mature eggs and froze 12 great quality embryos.

Infertility is such a roller coaster of emotions, ups and downs, and lots of waiting. This is a great group of women who are really supportive, so while you are going through this journey, you've come to the right place!

    Wishing you lots of luck!

  • Hi Fly - Welcome and GL!
I did Clomid twice.. once I responded after a second dose in the same cycle, the other cycle I had awful visual side effects and had to stop it before I responded. The other side effects were horrible too. I am kind of glad I'm not allowed to take it again!

I did one round of injectables (Bravelle - no side effects except maybe a mild warm flush) and it failed, and I just did a couple combination Femara with injectables cycles and had no side effects. Both of those failed, but I did respond well. If you didn't respond on just femara, maybe that's a route to check into as it's far fewer injections than a straight injects cycle!

Also, on the subject of injections, I've only had to do subcutaneous ones, but they were super easy. The anticipation of the shots is far worse than actually doing the shot. I have had IM shots, but haven't had to give them to myself so I can't help ya there!

As far as costs go, it varies depending on your RE and how many ultrasounds/bloodwork you require. For my clomid cycles, with all bw and sonos, it war around $1000 each. For my full injectables cycle, it was around $4k, for the femara + injects, it was around $850-$1000 each cycle. That was cheaper because I switched to a different RE who doesn't do excessive sonograms and bloodwork. They DO still do plenty of monitoring though. My old RE was just excessive and went overboard!

    Good luck!

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

  • Hello Ladies!!!
I went on my appointment last Friday and turns out Clomid did its job!!!!! Had a few follies on each side. Largest ones were 25 and 20. Was told to take the trigger shot Saturday night and had IUI done yesterday. I am now on TWW. Supposed to start taking progesterone on Thursday and have BETA on the 26th.

I'm trying not to get too anxious about knowing if it worked or not. So far, I've had some cramping  and breasts are sensitive. Hopefully these 2 weeks go by really fast and results are positive.
