good book club book for guys?

I am part of IRL book club with a few friends.  There are a few guys in our club that have requested that we read something that they would enjoy.  Of course, they have no suggestions.  Some of our past books have been:  In the Blood, Moving Day, Gone Girl, The Maze Runner,  Ready Player One, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Nineteen Minutes, The Other Wes Moore, Warm Bodies.  I feel like there is a decent mix there but I am looking for suggestions for any books that you think a guy would be interested in or maybe that your husband read and really enjoyed.  I really appreciate your help!

Re: good book club book for guys?

  • My husband and I both really like Neil Gaiman books. American Gods would probably be the best for discussion.

For those who liked Ready Player One, I always recommend Lexicon by Max Barry, or Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloane (though I think Lexicon has more discussable material). I listened to both of these with my husband on road trips and we both enjoyed them.

The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey and the Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey might be some good picks too.

  • Brutal Youth by Anthony Breznican
    The Troop by Nick Cutter
    90 books in 2015?

  • The Martian by Andy Weir
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (it's pretty long though)

    my read shelf:
Lauren's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • Aside from those already mentioned...

    Lock In by John Scalzi
    Defending Jacob by William Landay
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
    The Dinner by Herman Koch
    Greyhound by Stefan Piper
    Fugue State by Stefan Piper

Other good books for guys but not sure if they're good bookclub books:

    14 by Peter Clines
Off to Be the Wizard, Scott Meyer
The Dublin Murder Squad series by Tana French

  • Swan Song by Robert McCammon. Such a good book. It was published in 1987, and it has a FUGLY cover, but the ratings don't lie. It's a little dystopian sci fi,a little horror, all rolled into one disturbing, but excellent read. And it is definitely a "guys" book.

I adore Robin Sloane after going to a book signing/discussion of his on Technology and books. He is so engaging and gosh darn interesting.
