Kinda MMR: Ancestry

Hi,

Has anyone used or heard any feedback on ancestry.com or sites like it? Good value for the price?

Just doing a fun family history search!

So, you've used it? Did you find a lot?
  • On my dad's mom's side, moms and husbands sides I have been able to get back to about the 1700s (we have the world version). However, on my dad's dad's side I can't seem to get passed when they came over in the 1900's. They had a different name, but nobody that's alive remembers it.

  • I've never invested in that kind of thing, but my family, at least my mom's side kept a really good history.  my maternal line can be traced back to the late 16th century, and came to the US on the Mayflower in 1620. However, my dad's maternal line gets lost 4 generations back, his mom is 1st generation american, her parents arrived in Ellis Island in the early 20th century.

I think it is really cool information to have, and is probably worth the fee that those sites charge if they have a track record of producing accurate results.

My mom uses it.  She gets great value out of it.  I think she's gotten us back to the 1700's on both sides.  She's actually found some relatives through ancestry who we've never met (but who also use the program).  They're going to meet this spring.

  • Just a tip though, it's not worth it to do the smaller versions of like just America. 70% of the good information can only be accessed with world.

  • Thanks!

I just emailed my DH's great uncle who put me in touch with another family member. On DH's side, through his dad, we can trace his family back to England in 1644.

A 2nd cousin of mine traced my dad's family back to Italy in the 1800's.

My MIL just told me that a cousin of her dad has traced their family history back into the 1700s.

Basically, DH's family has done a good job of keeping this info. Mine, not so much. But, maybe I can have a little project.

  • For the world version, does it translate for you? My ancestors are from Germany and Italy and i don't know either language well enough to read documents?
  • It sort of does, if it can read the handwriting and you hover your cursor over the word it will show the English translation. There are some documents and some words it can't read.

  • Yeah, I've always been a little wary of trying it out.  My mom's family has kept EXCELLENT records from when they came to the US in the late 1800s, but further back than that means looking at Portuguese records and none of us speak Portuguese.  In fact, my grandma always jokes that the only time Portuguese was spoken in her household growing up is when her parents didn't want the kids to understand what they were saying.

Same with my dad's side.  My dad was first generation born here and I'd have to look at German records to go back further.  But nobody speaks German.
