Costco/Amex Breakup

Since a lot of you are Costco shoppers I thought this might be of interest:

I have the JetBlue Amex that is also going away, but it's not my primary card so we'll see how this all shakes out.

Re: Costco/Amex Breakup

  • Ummm WOW.

I hadn't heard this, but very interesting!  We actually have the Costco AmEx for gas... I wonder what will happen to it?

Not going to lie, I would love it if Costco moved to Visa.  I can get more back for gas on one of my Visas, but Costco's prices start so much lower than it doesn't shake out to buy gas elsewhere.

AmEx cards have some huge perks, but I sort of think that - as a brand overall - AmEx falls short in some key areas.

  • I heard about this.

We have the Amex card too via Costco. It's the only reason we have it (Costco membership and for paying there and not having to write checks). 3% back on gas. 2% back on restaurants. 1% back on everything else.

We need to keep our Costco membership, though.

Wouldn't mind having one less CC, but with this relationship going away, Amex will probably lose us as customers and we'll go with whatever CC CostCo does end up with.

We've had this Amex for about 24 months. It won't break our credit if we close it. I'm just not going to keep it open if it no longer applies to my Costco membership.

Yep we're the same way.  We have no loyalty to this card, other than that it serves as our Costco membership.  We certainly won't break up with Costco, but I have no problems breaking up with AmEx.  It would be nice to be able to get rid of a card.

This happened a few months ago here in Canada. They now accept MasterCard and encouraged us to apply for their new linked MasterCard, which we did though we could have just used an existing card.

At the same time, AMEX offered us a new version of their card as well (no longer linked to Costco), which we were going to just ignore/close but it's actually offering us some sweet deals right now so we've activated it and will use it for points and cash back on some upcoming home reno purchases. I always thought I would do away with AMEX if I didn't need it for Costco but I'm reconsidering for the time being (and honestly, their customer service has been amaaaaazing).
  • Argh, @Xstatic3333, don't even get me started!  I just got an Amex card through Costco only about 6 months ago.  I wouldn't have bothered if I had known this was going to happen.  I'm not going to cancel my Amex.  I don't see any reason to do that, now that I have it.  But I am REALLY hoping I can just convert a Capital One credit card I already have...I think that is who they are going with?...to my membership card instead of having to apply for yet another credit card.
