NMMR: freezing temps and garden

I know this is a gardening question but this is the only real active board and I'm terrible at keeping plants alive. So the last couple days have been well below freezing and so I covered our butterfly bush and budding trees, today is warmer, then the next couple days are right at freezing or just above. Can I remove the coverings now or wait a bit longer?

Re: NMMR: freezing temps and garden

  • I personally would just keep the coverings on since it is only rest of today the weather will be nicer.  But I do have to give you the caveat that my DH is the gardener in the family, not me.  We have a wonderful, huge tarp we use for our garden and I seem to remember I've seen him leave it on if there was only one day of nice weather between near freezing ones.
  • Up North, we tend to just cover them to prevent them from frosting than you would uncover them for the day and recover at night.  Or at least that is what my mom does with her plants for the past roughly 60 years.
  • Yes...I play this game with my garden every spring/fall. if it's getting above freezing during the day, uncover them so they can absorb some sunlight. cover them back up as the sun is setting.

  • Depending on what you put on the plants to protect them. If you put buckets or bags over them, bascially anything that would prevent natural sun, rain & wind from getting to them during the day when it warms up, then I would remove the covering during the day. If you put fabric or newspaper over them, you should be okay leaving them covered.
