Capital 360--A good idea?

Hi all, I was reading through some of the threads and some of you ladies mentioned having a Capital 360 savings account. I did some research on it last night and I am very intrigued. But is the interest good enough to open up an account? How quickly would the money grow? I'm not good with math so this kind of stuff has always been tricky for me.

Right now, my FI and I have a joint checking and savings account at SunTrust. I think we would go ahead and keep that and just link the savings account to our SunTrust checking. Or is it worth it to open up a 360 checking account too?

My FI and I are really gung-ho about building up as much savings as we can. We are sort of starting from scratch as we have had unexpected expenses and now wedding expenses are coming up. Plus we are working on getting the money together for an apartment.

So with that in mind, is opening up a Capital One 360 savings account a good idea? Are there any cons that I'm not aware of?

  • Nobody is giving great interest rates these days, but Capital 360 is better than most banks.  You need to be aware that it will take a few days to actually have your money once a withdrawal is processed.
When the Fed finally increases interest rates, you will see interest rates on savings, checking go up -- as will interest rates on new  loans.
  • I like Capital One 360. It keeps our savings separate and it's easy to deposit checks. It makes a little interest, though nothing crazy. You can even schedule biweekly auto deposits to match your pay schedule, which is pretty cool. Most banks just do monthly.

One caveat-If I remember correctly, you guys are getting married soon. Capital One 360 won't let you deposit checks unless the name(s) on the check match the account, exactly. Our local credit union was willing to work with us on depositing all those "Mr. and Mrs." checks, but the Capital One 360 people just don't have that ability. You can just transfer money from your checking, however.
  • Good to know. We are getting married in October this year. Only about seven months away! But maybe we will wait a little while before we open up a Capital One 360 account. Not sure, I'll have to talk to FI and see what he wants to do.

Whoa, whoa!  Is that 4% interest or .4% interest.  I'm assuming it is a typo and should be (point) 4, based on it being .1 for the remaining balance, but I had to ask.

Nope it is not a typo.  Credit unions are awesome.  I will never go back to commerce bank again.
