When to test

I recenlty had to stop taking birth control due to getting a blood clot in my leg.  For the timeline, I had my period late January and was scheduled to restart the pills on Jan 29, but did not.  I have not had a period since.  I estimated I was due on 2/22, but still have not had a period.  I took 1 pregnancy test the day after my missed period and it was negative.  I tried again last night, but the test didn't work (control didn't light up).  How long before it is abnormal after stopping the pills is it to miss a period?

Re: When to test

  • It took me about 3-6 months after stopping the pill before I was semi-regular (35-40 days at that point - I went back on the pill soon after that because I met my now husband).

Everyone is different, though. The best time (so I've heard) to test is first thing in the morning. If it makes you feel better, test in the morning. Otherwise, your body has to come back down from all the hormones. Give it time.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, other GP'ers, but if you don't have a period and continue with negative pregnancy tests and hit the 60-day mark, then talk to your OB/GYN. You may have to take meds to induce a period.

  • Test in the am, once a week until you get a period, get a positive, or hit 60 days without a period. At 60 days, call your doc and see what they say. Most will have to wait a little longer since you are JUST off BC. Some might give you a script to bring on your period after confirming you are not pregnant.

you're right, at 60 days they can jump-start your period with progesterone. I stopped taking BCPs a year ago, my periods still aren't regular. it happens. you've been taking oral hormones, which basically make your body get lazy and not produce it's own hormones, it could take a while for it to sort itself out. Most doctors will wait unitl you've been off the pill at least 6 months to start doing any testing for irregular periods. if you aren't TTC still make sure you're using barrier methods.

ETA: that said, you don't have to take the script for progesterone, your not putting yourself in any danger by not having a period...I like to avoid meds if I can most of the time, my first cycle off BCPs was 176 days.
