Re: Who uses Net Galley?

  • I do! I love NG!

Some publishers are more picky about approvals than others. The approval to feedback rating is pretty important to them, so make sure you are leaving feedback for the titles you get. (Even if I don't get around to reading something, I'll leave feedback explaining that I couldn't read it and thank them for approving me anyway.) Have a nice complete profile, and make sure you put on there that you are a library professional, because most pubs really want to get their books to librarians and teachers. Link to your GR and anywhere else you share reviews.

They key for me has been moderation. I try not to get too over-eager about requesting titles because then I end up with a bunch of books I'm never going to have a chance to read. I only request things I'm super excited about.

How long does a request usually take?

It totally depends on the pub and who is approving them. Sometimes I have never heard back on a request, sometimes they do it that same day, sometimes it takes a week or two.

  • YL said it all!  If you're an ALA member be sure to include your membership number and the type of library you work at.

I'm not an ALA member, but I am a member of the state library association so I did put that. I already got a request approved!

Do either of yall use Edelweiss?

  • I've used Edelweiss in the past, but stopped when I wasn't able to download books to my Sony ereader.  If I every bite the bullet and get a Kindle I'll go back, but it's too much trouble to only be able to read on my computer.

  • I don't. I signed up for it and I logged on, but I was confused and didn't understand it immediately, so I never went back on it again. heh.

Julie, what % of your requests are approved?

    Can I marry them all?

  • On Netgalley?  Probably 90%.  Like YL said, I make sure to leave feedback for every item, even if it's just that I was unable to finish the book or didn't have time to read it before it expired.

  • I love NG. But I try to avoid it unless I'm requesting a specific book. Otherwise I'll request WAY too many. :)

  • I signed up for NetGalley and then forgot about it so I don't remember my password. I obviously suck at life.

  • I use both NetGalley and Edelweiss. Edelweiss definitely has a learning curve, but I like it even better than NetGalley now because of the ability to narrow down my searches. One thing that's nice for me is that I've been auto-approved for several publishers as a librarian, so I don't have to request their books anyore. When I log in, I'm able to just choose what I'd like to review and send it immediately to my Kindle.

I haven't been writing reviews as much lately, but I definitely still give the publisher feedback & let them know if I ordered the book for the library, put it on display, or recommended it to patrons. More feedback usually equals more appprovals! :)

  • @Super_Librarian How do you read Edelweiss galleys?  Do you use an ereader?  I'm wondering if my issues revolve around having a Sony, which is basically the dinosaur of ereaders.
