2006 Torrent 79,000 $84/month plus $50/month with basic power train warranty so 134/month which is my max and I can only fit my massage table (I'm a massage therapist) with back seat down because has these odd towers in cargo area for shelves that are missing or 2008 Torrent 59,000 $140//month and no warranty because I cant afford more than the 140 and fits my table. Dont know which to buy an need to know by Monday!
Re: Older car with warranty or newer without?
Have you researched different after market warranty companies? I find they vary quite a bit and dealerships will always give you a much worse deal than negotiating with the "after market" company yourself. And, yes, you can and SHOULD negotiate with those companies.
Personally, I've had after market warranties on three different cars and found them to be pretty useless. I only actually used the warranty once and the warranty itself was far more than the one repair. However, with that said, they do give piece of mind if a major repair (like a power train) is needed. I've never had that happen, but it doesn't mean it couldn't.
I'm going to read very carefully and look for reviews and I am more concerned about the engine, transmission and timing belt.
Good luck with it! If room opens up in your budget, you can always buy an after market warranty later...though the older the car gets the more they cost and/or less they provide. Of course, almost all of them have a 30-day grace period, so you don't want to wait until you need one to buy one!
Most of them are transferrable for a small fee, usually $50. Or, if something terrible happens like your car gets totaled, they will pay you back a prorated amount. I actually had that happen. Totaled a used car that I'd only had for 18 months. Had an after market warranty on it, and was paid back the majority of what I had paid for it.
I should have mentioned that, definitely do research on the after market warranty companies. Talk to your mechanic and see if he recommends any of them. And use a "throw away" e-mail if you request quotes. They will bombard you with e-mails/spam. Not so much once you are a client, but in trying to get you to sign up.
I did call the one associated with carfax but they are double the amount from the dealer although a little longer term and miles.
Also, from the dealer, they said I have to buy it tomorrow when I sign the papers b/c the 30 day, 1,000 mile Ny State "warranty" doesnt cover the same components. I forgot how he explained it exactly but I'm going to ask him again.
I don't think I'm going to get it at all and take a chance without it since I just cant afford it.
Thank you for all the info :-)
I'm sure that is true for a dealer. They only sell after market warranties at the time of sale. But there are tons of independent after market warranty companies and you can buy from them at any time.
So here's my dealer story in regards to after market warranties. I bought a convertible Chrysler Sebring about 7 years ago or so. It was two years old when I bought it. Before I went in to sign the paperwork, I researched the cost for an after market warranty and already had a few quotes in my pocket ready to go.
The best I found was a 5-year, bumper to bumper, 75,000 mile warranty...with those numbers being AT the time I bought the car. So, 5 years and 75,000 miles added to the year and mileage the car already had. It was $1200 for this coverage. The dealer tried to sell me an after market warranty that basically had the same terms, except their cost was $2600. When I told the sales guy, "No thanks, I already found a warranty for the same terms that is less than half that." He then "magically" dropped the warranty price to $1360, for the exact same warranty. Like, instantly dropped it.
Quite frankly, that immediately made me very skeptical and untrusting of anything he said. Because look how much he was trying to overcharge me for that warranty! What a jerk. I bought the car anyway despite that. Also despite the fact that he had framed pictures of his wife all over his desk and walls...some of them huge... and in every single one she was wearing only a tiny bikini or lingerie. I mean, I'm no prude or anything, but it was just weird and unprofessional.
