What age for Percy Jackson and/or Artemis Fowl?

I'm looking for books for my 8 year old son. I just started Artemis Fowl after a teacher recommended it to me. He reads at the level of a 4-5th grader, but a lot of books at that level get into content that I'm not ready for him to read yet.

If you've read Artemis Fowl or the Percy Jackson series, would they be appropriate? I have the first Percy Jackson one on hold at the library to read. Or do you have any other suggestions?

    My son started reading the Percy books when he was 9, and I felt the content was appropriate for his age. (He's 10 now, and still into Rick Riordan.) He was totally engaged in the story and flew through the first few books without me having to prompt him to read every day. He's never been a big reader, so that was a huge deal!

    My boys started reading Percy Jackson at that age.  They never finished it though because they are kinda slow readers and I think the size of it was a little daunting for them.  I was fine with the content though.  A few other series we have had success with are the Origami Yoda series, the Timmy Failure series and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

    I read the Percy books to my kids when Madison was 9 but Ashlee would sit and listen too (only 6).
    They loved the stories!

    I don't know if you've read these yet but I've been reading the How to Train Your Dragon series with my daughter (7) and she loves them.  Cute stories, awesome vocabulary, and a dash of potty humor for added giggles.
