Internship vs. Keeping Your Current Job

So, I will be starting classes soon. I would love to continue at my job and grow with it. I am curious though if a variety of internships would benefit me more than staying here. I would like to increase my earnings as quickly and as much as I can. I make a fair amount here and feel that I am getting really good experience but it is a small company on a limited budget. Several of the internships I have researched would actually net me a small raise, but they are temporary positions obviously. My main question is if I want to be able to make a very significant income later on, I would need to be with a large company right? What will that company look for most? Lengthier experience by staying here and staying under the "average" wages in the area, or trying out some of the internships for a more varied experience on my resume and getting paid a little bit more?

  • I think internships offer amazing experience. I had two required for my degree however they are very rarely paid in my field. I worked part time on top of school and the internship.

  • If you want to be paid more, then get an internship at a company that you think you would like.  A lot of places tend to hire interns or co-ops when they graduate since they are already familiar with you and you with them.

    Also, if you can, get internships that will make you more well rounded.

    I am an Engineer that has worked manufacturing floor, co-oped in a R&D lab, did two years out of college as a capital project/ manufacturing engineer now I am a design engineer.  With my background I am more valuable versus someone that has only one type of experience.

    I second that internships can lead to job offers. My nephew did two summer internships for the same company. After the second summer he was offered a position because he wasn't going away to school anymore. He's been there ever since. He's been with the same company starting at 19 and he is now 25. There is something to be said about loyalty & longevity to a company, but when they ask you why you left your current job you can honestly say, that you left that job to do internships that were geared more for the field of study that you majored in and the field you want to be in long term. Even if those internships don't turn into jobs you have an honest reason for leaving your current job & having some short term positions

  • I work for an engineering firm.  My company hires a lot of interns (paid) during the summer, both engineering and non-engineering students.  If they have openings at the time of graduations, they will always choose to hire their interns first...though it is typically just the engineering students because those are the job openings they are much more likely to have available.
