Not MM-related: I have to brag about H
Well my H just had a great accomplishment today! Back in January the Alabama Symphony held a competition for composers - the prize is a reading session of the piece and possibly having the piece scheduled during their regular season (2016-2017 season). They host the competition every year, and they take 5 pieces each year. It's a national competition, and the selection committee was headed by a lady at Yale this year.
Last year all of the winners were PhD's with academic positions in music composition. This year my H threw his hat in the ring, and he found out today that he's one of the 5! We are both so excited and blown away. He got into grad school for music composition but his practical nature won out, and he went to law school instead. He rationalized the decision by thinking that he couldn't practice law without a JD, but he could continue to compose without a master's or PhD (and he really wanted to be able to do both). Still, I think he's always wondered if he made the right decision. Today he got that validation. He told me he almost cried!
Anyway, I just wanted to share. Many full-time composers never get to hear their work performed by a professional symphony, and my H - who composed this while practicing law full time - will get to have that experience. Plus, there's a chance (albeit, it's a small one) that he'll get programmed for the regular season. If that happens, I'm going to temporary suspend my MM-ness, invite our family/friends into town to hear it, and throw a huge after-party!
I'm just so proud of him - thanks for letting me share!

Also, lots of great news around here lately!
You have a great guy!
That's so awesome!!!! It just brought a smile to my day
. As a former artist turned banker, I love seeing people still pursue their passions even while being 'practical'.
So exciting!!! That is an amazing, amazing accomplishment. I'm thrilled for you all.
One of my coworkers has a double major in engineering and music, of all things! But, it's worked out well for him. He is a pianist, and worked his way through school with that skill. He still keeps himself very busy with it, part-time. Heck, he's already booked up for NEXT year's wedding season, lol.
Yay for him and you! That's so great.
P.S. I like how he opted for the practical career choice but retained his musical interest and did both. That's very wise and MM!!
