My twitter feed was all on fire yesterday over this A ndrew Smith interview: http://www.vice.com/read/failure-of-male-societies-869

Particularly this:
On the flip side, it sometimes seems like there isn't much of a way into your books for female readers. Where are all the women in your work?
I was raised in a family with four boys, and I absolutely did not know anything about girls at all. I have a daughter now; she's 17. When she was born, that was the first girl I ever had in my life. I consider myself completely ignorant to all things woman and female. I'm trying to be better though.

Just curious if you saw any of this backlash...I know you were talking about this issue w/ Grasshopper Jungle.

  • Oh man, Sarah McCarry's Twitter feed had me actually laughing out loud.

I didn't read a ton of it, figuring everyone will blog it over the next few days, but I'm inclined to agree with the general outrage over the idea that a male writer has no way of learning what the female experience is like.  Bless his little heart.

I'm just thinking of replacing that "women" with "POC" or "person with disability" and wondering how he manages to get a pass on this, and actually gets acclaim.

Oh, to be an upper middle class white man...

  • If you can only write about exactly what you have personally experienced in life, it says something about your skill.  And the fact that he can write about the world being destroyed by grasshoppers, which I'm guessing isn't something he grew up with, shows that he can indeed imagine other experiences.  So basically he's just too lazy/unconcerned/uninterested to appeal to female readers.  And he's proud to say it.

  • And not even appeal to female readers, but present a well-rounded, realistic view of women/girls to his male readers.

  • I have no clue who he is.  I've never heard of either of the books he wrote.
