WWYD?

Another opinion post. I know!  But I really don't know who else to ask.

Lily's birthday is this Sunday.  Yay!  My mom and sister are planning to come for the weekend.  Possibly my brother as well.  A few moms and kids from a play group will be coming over on Saturday for cake and a play date/party.  At this age it's mainly just a play date.

Yesterday afternoon my mom texted me that there is a whooping cough outbreak at her school.  She got the booster shot when I was pregnant but was going to check on my brother's shot record before they come.  I called Lily's doctor to ask if it was okay for them to come.  (Yes, I know, I felt kind of silly doing that.)  The Dr said if they had been in close contact with someone to worry but if not, than not.  If my mom was so have any symptoms like a fever or sore throat or cough then she should not come.  So I texted all that to my mom.  Her response was that she was around a kid last week who was removed from school on Friday due to whooping cough and was contagious.  And that she wasn't feeling well with a headache, sore throat, and ear ache but that she had called her doctor.  I was thinking she shouldn't even come if she is sick even if it isn't whooping cough.  So I tried to call her when she was off work.  She said she was busy and would call me back.  She didn't.  (This is pretty normal for her).

Today I texted her around lunch time asking how she felt.  She said better and that her Dr gave her a z-pack.  Then she texted me that she would see my on Friday.  I haven't really responded to her.  I'm at a loss.  I still feel like she shouldn't come if she isn't feeling well, but then I wonder if I'm just being paranoid.  I plan to call her later this evening. If I ask her not to come, she will be hurt and mad at me.  Even if I suggest waiting a week to come visit.  But if I let her come, then I feel like I should give all the parents a heads-up in case they don't want to take the risk of exposing their kid(s).  I'm stressing out about this and I probably shouldn't be.  I don't want to be a helicopter parent but I also don't want to expose ourselves and others to something like whooping cough.

To add to my frustration, there is a water main break so they turned off our water this afternoon.  I didn't realize how much I washed my hands until I can't.  So I'm sitting here feeling sorry for myself.  I might pour myself a glass of wine as it's almost 5.  And I'm anxiously awaiting Jen to share her awesome news.

  • Enjoy the wine! :)  Have a glass for me.

My parents err on the side of caution.  If they're sick, think they're sick,  or whatever, they stay away from Ryan to keep him from getting it.

  • I only had one glass.  But as I usually only have a half a glass, we can say half was for you.  :)

  • That is a tough one.  To me, it sounds like she is covered, and might have a common cold.  plus the z pack will help.

  • Jen, that's what I finally decided.  I don't know why I was so freaking out about it.  Plus I looked up more info on whooping cough.  It says it takes 7-10 days to show symptoms and if she isn't showing any by Friday, then she's okay. Plus with the z-pack she should be safe.

  • Just curious, but did you not have lily vaccinated? I know I have been reading a lot of controversy about it.
  • Oh I did.  We did a delayed schedule.  Only one or two shots at a time and then a few weeks later we would go back for the others.  But she is current on all of her vaccines.  I was more worried about the other people coming like my elderly grandparents and I know two of the other kids coming are not vaccinated (one for health reasons).  So I just let the parents know what was up and will let them make that decision.

  • I think letting the parents know is probably the best. She should be fine otherwise.

  • I see you solved this already, but I was going to say to let her come if it is just a cold.
