update on my mom and brother
Some of you may remember I posted several months ago asking for T&Ps for my mom and brother and their various situations. Since you were all so supportive I thought I should give an update.
Mom: she was living in the country with my brother and her ex father in law (my dad left 11 years ago while my grandfather was living with us). My grandfather has always made my mom uncomfortable and caused her so much stress she started having severe health problems. My brother was spending a few days with my dad when my grandfather came into my mom's room at night and tried to force him self on her. He was lucid and has no hint of Alzheimer's or dementia, which makes what he did even worse. Long story short: after that incident my mom applied to a housing co-op who's priority it at risk women. She and my brother moved in last summer. The apartment is small, but she loves it. She lives close to work and her friends so she has been spending a lot of time going out and just enjoying life.
Brother: since 2011 he has been undergoing tests to determine what is making him dizzy and affecting his balance. After far too many tests, it was recently determined he has
autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxia. It's been very hard for all of us to watch my brother decline, because he is so young and was once very active. Since 2011 he has stopped all his physical activity (he used to run, cycle, lift weights and snowboard) and was recently told he should never drive. Which is especially hard to hear because he worked so hard to pass his in class driver's test and never even got to try driving. My brother is 23 and can't even walk in a straight line anymore. He pretty much stays inside the apartment all day (and a few weeks ago he bent down to pick something up, lost his balance and put his head through the drywall. He is okay though). In January he got a puppy which we all hope will help him slowly ease back into physical activity. Since he can't really do much of anything my mom is suggesting he apply for disability assistance, which will give him a small amount of money each month so that he can fell like he is contributing to their living situation, as well as his own savings.
Thanks for your support and reading this long post! Both my mom and brother enjoy being away from my grandfather, which sounds terrible but he caused both of them so much stress.
