Re: Monday Accountability

  • How was your weekend?
Not too bad - spent about $125 on groceries, but that included dinner, breakfast, and lunch for my parents who visited this weekend.  Also spent $25 on gas.

    Any progress on your goals?
We have our house back!  We got everything put away and dusted.  We even vacuumed the air ducts for our HVAC.  Everything in the house feels so much cleaner and more settled!

What are your favorite Easter traditions?
My mom makes a lemon dessert for Easter to kick off spring/summer.  Usually it's lemon meringue pie, but sometimes it's lemon bars.  We're going to continue that tradition!

  • How was your weekend?
the weekend was good.  spending wise...good!
Friday: $15 Joann fabrics...yarn for the many baby showers I'm invited to (yes in addition to the 8 weddings we're going to). I also need a new pair of super warm socks for teaching (I've worn holes in the bottoms of the ones I made 4 years ago)
Saturday: $5 butter and a can of pineapple (yes random)
    Sunday: $135-groceries
    Any progress on your goals?
none.  We have decided that the windows on our house need to be replaced (they get all condensated all winter, We put plastic films over them this winter, but I've still been wiping-up puddles.  even if we have to finance part of it, I think it needs to be done this year or we continue to risk doing damage to the house (rot from moisture). I'm pricing out windows today to get an idea of the scope of the project, we'll tie it in with out basement renovation and take advantage of the pro-discount on materials.
What are your favorite Easter traditions?
we're starting new traditions, but we alwasy go to church and cook a nice meal

    1. $15 Dinner $60 Petsmart grooming, $47 gas for both cars, $47 Kohls, Free movie but $20 popcorn/soda. All paid in cash

    2. 3 more condo showings! Getting paid this week, should be banking some $ later in the week

    3. We don't really have any Easter traditions, but I still like getting Easter baskets! Oh and we go to my parents every year for dinner

  • 1. Good! We visited family both days, so parents bought lunch and dinner. We only spent $100 on groceries, $20 on gas and $8 on a walk to Einstein Bagel.

    2. Nothing this week. This was the paycheck that goes straight to Wells Fargo Mortgage. :)

    3. We've realized the last two years we unintentionally planned vacations around Easter, which as been interesting. The first we were in Austrialia where it's a big deal. Everything was closed on Good Friday. Everything. We found one place to get food, and they said even though it's not a particularly religious country, Easter is bigger than Christmas there. Last year, we were in Morroco, a primarily Muslim country, which was interesting in the opposite way! We're here this year, but while we go to a Methodist church, it's not a holiday we personally celebrate.

  • 1.  $80 on groceries (way over-that's what I get for having H go!), $30 on food/drink (budgeted), $25 on gas

    2.  My car loan is now below $2000.  So close!

    3.  We don't really have any Easter traditions.  My family's not into it, H's sometimes invites us to a brunch that's not the most fun but that's been falling away the last few years.  Hopefully we'll go to church and then have a nice meal at home.  I'll also dig into some Cadbury mini eggs since I gave up chocolate for Lent.
  • How was your weekend?
Good! In-laws were in town and treated us to lunch and dinner saturday (we protested to no avail). We spent about $40 buying food and drinks for their stay. Didn't have time for groceries yesterday, so we'll do about $70 today for the week.

    Any progress on your goals?
Nothing this week, but DH is at his first day of work now, so that will be good for goals soon!

What are your favorite Easter traditions?
I guess we don't really have any! We always have church, but with no kids, we don't really have any planned traditions.

How was your weekend? Pretty good- groceries ($129), dinner on Saturday ($22), gas ($26), target ($12)
Any progress on your goals? DH is starting to contribute to monthly savings now too- his paycheck was mostly going to day care and monthly credit card stuff (always paid in full!), but he's had excess $ in his account the last few months so $250/paycheck will go to savings. Between the 2 of us, that'll be at least $1,500/month to help fund Roth, 529 plans, and home improvement stuff this summer.

What are your favorite Easter traditions? We took the girls to an egg hunt at the Botanical Gardens last year and have tickets for this year- hoping to be a tradition for a few years (while they're little anyway).

Thanks! I'm waiting for H to send me actual measurements, I estimated and came-up with ~$4000 for the windows, including replacing the sliding porch door ($1300). our house is a little one story with only 9 windows.  we do have 4 more double-hung windows in the basement, I've not noticed any condensation on those. so I don't think replacing them is an immediate need, but that may change after we finish some of that space.

Sunday:  $75 at Cabela's and $25 for gas

    Any progress on your goals?

Put extra $$ in the 'baby' account.  Had our first IUI today.  I so wanted to go shopping this weekend, but put the money in our 'baby' account to see if it worked first.

What are your favorite Easter traditions?

Breakfast by my parents house, followed by a lot of relaxing and laziness, till we are ready to eat lunch/dinner.  Love spending the whole day together, catching up etc

the contractor doing the work is a good friend, he's been doing contracting work for a long time but is just now starting his own business, so we're getting a really good rate on labor so he can start building his portfolio of independent work. I'm still waiting on his final estimate for the job, and he's adding the windows in, but when we were just talking basement and were throwing around numbers of "do you think if we aim to save X we'll have enough" he said we had more than enough and indicated that I was way over-estimating cost.
My first thought is we'll finish the basement and aim to put new windows in in the fall, so we may be able to pay for most of it by then. Option 2 is that if we can find a 0% interest option to finance the windows, if we have enough to cover the basement and labor on the windows, then we might do that to just do all the construction on the house at once. I don't think we should try to get through another winter without new windows. I *believe* we have enough saved to cover materials on everything, our friend is planning to give us a flat-rate for the labor on the job, regardless of how much time it takes him. I may seek another estimate just to make sure his rate is fair to everyone.

  • How was your weekend?
Pretty good.  Groceries: $125, curtain rods for living room: $46, cat food/supplies: $60, eating out: $20.

    Any progress on your goals?
    Extra $200 into savings.

What are your favorite Easter traditions?
With having kids I love filling their Easter baskets, we always go to church with my family.  This year we are hosting so we'll have dinner and then go to Easter Vigil service.  Easter Sunday we'll do a big brunch, kids will find their baskets, hunt for eggs, etc.

  • How was your weekend? It was bad this weekend. Really bad! We finally bit the bullet and bought a used 2nd car. We had been using IL's extra car or functioning as a 1 car household in the past but now that baby is due soon and IL's need car back for SIL, it was time. We put a hefty down payment (50%) on it and should be able to knock the rest of it out fairly quickly I hope.

    Any progress on your goals?
Well we did need a car and we got a good deal on a used one so I guess technically that's progress...?

What are your favorite Easter traditions?
We don't really do much for Easter. Neither of us are religious but we do usually get together with family for dinner so that is probably what we will do.

  • How was your weekend? Our weekend was very good! $13 on toiletries at Target, $20-something on gas, $3 for tip at brunch (my parents pick up the rest).

Any progress on your goals? Eh, a while ago we increased the monthly payment towards H's car loan, however we still need to file our taxes, start H's 401k at his new job, increase payments on student loans...so not really.

What are your favorite Easter traditions? Our family keeps to Polish traditions, so we do 8am mass, then the Swieconka brunch after, which we're on year 2 of hosting! We have all the aunts, uncles, cousins over and eat way too much food. It's a lot of work but a lot of fun!

Also, hi to all of you! I've been lurking here for a while, and have learned so much already. Figured I'd start to join in!

Yes, forgot to mention the Swieconka as well.  I am Polish also, came here when I was about 10 years old.

Miss the days of making paczki with my grandma!

How was your weekend? A little spendier than normal, but not bad.  $7 for breakfast sandwiches on Saturday, then we all went to lunch which was $30.  I did sell some baby clothes and got $61 for them.  Sunday we got groceries ($130) and gas ($40).

Any progress on your goals? Not this week.  DH started a new job at the beginning of the month, and is supposed to get paid on Thursday.  I am hoarding cash until the first paycheck comes in because I get nervous that there will be an issue with payroll or something.  He is also supposed to be getting paid out for his accrued/unused vacation time for his last job, but I'm not counting that until it gets here!  It will all go to debt.

What are your favorite Easter traditions? Doing an Easter egg hunt with DD1 when she wakes up on Easter.  We fill plastic eggs with candy and coins and hide them around.  DD2 was born about 3 days before Easter last year, so she may be able to scoot around and find some eggs this year :)

How was your weekend? Friday we went out for Happy Hour ($15) and dinner ($8 after a gift card) to "celebrate" my last day of work due to the layoff.  Saturday we went to a friends house and we spent $10 on dessert to take with us and I splurged and got some Easter candy and and birthday gift for their kids ($15).  Sunday we went to a NHL hockey game and spent about $20 of our entertainment budget.

Any progress on your goals? I have an interview tomorrow and I had to buy a new suit and pay to get the sleeves of the jacket shortened.  If I get the job it will be a $12,000 a year pay raise.  I applied for unemployment and there is a one week waiting period for benefits to kick in.  With the exception of job hunting expenses (new suit, alterations, etc.) my paychecks for this month and my severance will be put into savings.  We are operating in a pseudo emergency mode until I get a job.  We are continuing to finish work on the bar DH is building in the basement.  We are scaling back the types of materials we are using but there is no reason to stop work when it is so close to being finished.  Otherwise goals are on hold.

What are your favorite Easter traditions? Growing up we always went to Sunrise Service, our church had a hot breakfast in the fellowship hall then all the kids would play until Sunday School started, then regular church and then we would go home to hunt eggs and have an Easter dinner.  DH and I rotate Easter between our families and none of the churches they attend have a sunrise service and we are too old to hunt eggs now.  :)

  • How was your weekend? Good; spent most of Saturday volunteering for a Jaycees event and then delivered a cake.  H was home sick all day.  ($0).  Sunday--Went to the home show and splurged on lunch since we've been good about not eating out as often ($23).  Spent $90 on groceries, which was under budget and planned for.

Any progress on your goals? Not really.  We're still waiting to hear back on our front porch estimate.  Everything else remains the same.

What are your favorite Easter traditions? My mom has always planned a pretty elaborate Easter Egg hunt for us kids, and now that we are all grown, we get together at her house to put it on for my niece.  She's the only child in the family for the foreseeable future, so she gets majorly spoiled at every holiday.
  • How was your weekend?
Spendy. Spent $75 on groceries between DH and I, $65 gas, $348 on my pup's surgery (partially budgeted; I underestimated by over half), and $116 on crafts that I will be using my allowance on.

    Any progress on your goals?
    $240 went into various accounts

What are your favorite Easter traditions?
We go to Sunday morning Easter mass then out to lunch at our favorite Portuguese restaurant. We also do an inside Easter egg hunt with the kids.

  • 1 - I don't remember everything but we did go out to eat for a bday dinner on saturday and it was $75.  We rented a movie on Friday which was $1.62 and we went to walmart on sunday which was $31.

2 - $66 to e fund and $66 to retirement.  We also had someone out to quote us to paint the outside of our house.  Hoping to hear good news this week on taxes - hoping that we get enough back to cover the entire cost.

3 - we usually go to my parents house on easter day.  they hide eggs for dd for find.  I fill dd's easter basket with things from the dollar store.

  • How was your weekend?
Ouch. My wallet is still crying. H had been out of town for the previous two weeks and I challenged myself to not go to the grocery store for anything other than fruit and vegetables while he was gone. So for our first shopping trip, we spent $120 and another $100 on household goods (laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, deodorant, paper towels, etc.). $22 on lunch before we went shopping. $100 on new Bluetooth earbuds for H.

    Any progress on your goals?
$200 to SL, $300 in our moving money account, $30 in the Disney vacation account.

What are your favorite Easter traditions?
When I was little, we used to hunt for eggs. Each cousin had his/her own color of the plastic eggs and they were all filled with dollar bills, candy, and lottery tickets. Now, we don't do anything at all. Well, H usually works and it's just another Sunday to me.
  • How was your weekend? For the wallet, not good, for preventing even more expenses later really good.  We signed a contract to get our roof done including plywood over our boards since Ohio now has a "zero" gap policy and there is a minimum of about 1/2 space between all of the boards.  Our wood siding is also really old and the cost difference between repairs and paint versus siding was only $2500.  Since we will be getting this all done in spring, we are getting some serious savings since this will be a jump start for the company.  The total price tag is just above 18k.  I also over spent getting items to host our friends.  They brought dinner over but I had to get Irish adult beverages and some Irish cheese to share.  This was an extra $70 that was not budgeted.

Any progress on your goals? Not yet, need to schedule my credit card payments.  I may just wait until my next statement comes in.

What are your favorite Easter traditions? Dying eggs and making up the Easter baskets.  MW and I tend to be opposite of a lot of people, we skip mass on Easter and Christmas since we don't like being in large, crowded situations.
