2. The flip side of the flexibility is that I often need to work long hours or bring my work home. This has led to some fighting with H, who has a union job with very set hours and little to no take-home stress.
3. In college I did a 24 hour dance marathon to raise money for AIDS research. I was probably up for 30 hours that day. It was rough!
What is the worst? The department I work for (finance)- they're much more concerned about the bottom line than the clinical side of the house (which is more interesting, but makes less $).
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? When DD#1 was born. I was awake the morning before she was born at 7am, went to the hospital that day at 6pm. She was born about 6 hours later at 12:04am, and we didn't shut our eyes until 4pm or so that day. Almost 36 hours awake as a first time mom with a newborn (recipe for disaster).
What is the worst? It only being part time and it feeling pretty pointless
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? In high school I suffered form depression and severe anxiety. There were definitely times I was up in 40 hour stretches. I have never tried to pull an all night-er for fun or school. I am happier when I sleep.
Love: March 2010 Marriage: July 2013 Debt Free: October 2014 TTC: May 2015
The worst is my direct supervisor- she is fantastic in a lot of ways but she doesn't know how to leave her personal drama at home and will call in or come in really late frequently.
The longest without sleep for me would the nightmare trip (only one bad one out of several) from Utah to Texas with a puppy who had to stop every ten minutes and then breaking down halway with an impending snowstorm. That was a fun 30+ hours.
What is the worst? The direction the company is going. I work for a bank. couple years ago they merged 2 big banks together, and ever since, slowly things have been changing. We are in the process of TTC, so I am waiting it out, and hope to find something new after (fingers crossed) my maternity leave.
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? Close to 48 hours. I was traveling, all alone from Poland, and was supposed to have a direct flight to Newark NJ. For what ever reason, flight was cancelled, ended up going to London, missed a flight there, by the time they figured out what's next and put me up in a hotel room, just to be back at the airport few hours later. By the time I got home it was close to 48 hours, and I was ready for bed!!
1. favorite thing about my job? the bonuses when they get paid out, good medical care, every is super friendly and overally I like what I do and the fact that I can basically manage things myself without being bothered.
2. The worst thing about my job? One co-worker in particular. Also the company is very nit-picky on certain things (what we can/can't wear, that we have to punch in/out and the exact time our hours are etc)
3. Longest time without sleep? I usually get 7-8 hrs a night, so it's very rare for me to get little sleep and I can't even remember the last time that was. I NEED my sleep!
I work for a committee that ensures regulatory compliance with biomedical research, which I find really interesting. I also love that it's a desk job. My previous job as a lab assistant had me on my feet all day long.
What is the worst?
I took a pay cut and benefit cut when I took this job and it still bothers me, months later. We're doing okay financially now but I'm worried we will be struggling once baby comes.
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why?
Hmm..probably about 36 hours. It was the last night of my Freshman year of college and my friends and I stayed up all night and then had to move home. I was so awake from how much fun we had and the moving that I didn't sleep for awhile. I don't think I could do that again!
I work for a medium sized engineering firm in a project support role (not an engineer). My favorite thing about my current job is my coworkers are awesome and great to work with. I'm also not micro-managed at all, which drives me nuts.
My least favorite thing about my current job is I am just not busy enough. I know that is kind of a "luxury" thing to complain about, but it seriously drives me nuts. I'm happiest and most productive in jobs where, at least most days, I have impossible mountains to move before the day ends at 5 but still vanquish Mt. Paperwork Everest the majority of the time.
The longest I went without sleep was when I was managing a RaceTrac gas station/convenience store. I was already scheduled to work the swing shift, plus the first shift the next morning. Then, my overnight manager didn't show up, and she was the ONLY one scheduled to work that shift. So, I ended up having to work from 2PM on Friday all the way through 11AM on Saturday. And that was also on my feet the whole time, for almost 24 hours.
1. I'm a CPA for a large public accounting firm. I am always learning and being challenged, and I do feel like I am getting better at my job every day. I couldn't do the same thing every day or feel bored. I also have a lot of flexibility now in terms of working from home or just being out of the office for kid stuff, but of course I do have to work nights/weekends to make that schedule work. I also think I am paid well for what I do.
2. It is a high-pressure, client-service industry so I do feel stressed a lot of the time. There is also always a lot of work to do, so I don't think I've ever felt "done" with my work in about 5 years
And like PP, I work based on chargeable hours, and tracking your time is a pain.
3. When I was in high school and college, I worked as a police dispatcher for a couple different towns. I would work back to back shirts (like 11PM-3PM), then have one shift off, then do 11p-3p again. I did that frequently and somehow survived, but I don't think I could do that now.
Favorite thing about my job: We have a decent benefits package and a lot of additional 'perks', such as occasional free tickets to local events, employee appreciation days, etc. Plus they are paying for my college courses!!! Also, I work for a community bank. The family that started the bank has always placed a major focus on giving back to the community and being involved, being a good neighbor. The bank sticks to those core values to this day, and I am so proud to work for a place that has such a respected position in our community and believes in giving back through donations and volunteerism.
Least favorite thing about my job: Some of my coworkers endlessly get on my nerves. It's frustrating to see people that have worked here 20 years and know that I am way ahead of them performance-wise. However, I always remind myself that a large portion of the current staff is within 10 years of retirement, so I could be running the place some day ;-).
Longest time without sleep: In high school, we used to have all night RPG sessions. More recently, I stay up for about 30 hours once a year in June for our Relay for Life event, since I am our team captain. Then I go home and sleep the whole weekend.
What is the worst? There is a lot of high school type drama at my work and a lot of favoritism. It can be really frustrating and takes a lot away from employees that aren't in the clique. Edited to add: I also cannot stand how many people do not read stuff that is sent out!! I spend a lot of time answering questions that were answered in my inital email if they would just read.
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? Ah I have no idea. I love sleep, so I usually try to get at least 8 hours. I haven't pulled an all nighter in years. Most likely it was for a sleep over or something silly when I was younger.
What is the worst? We are the bastard group of our company and the rest of our Division can't see that we are no longer just focused on NAFTA and our true growth will be international. The CEO and our owners understand this, but the working stiffs don't understand this.
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? 36 plus hours a few times in the Navy. There was a few weeks that we had calculated that most of us had been working roughly 108 hours over those weeks, I had to work more because of what I was in charge of. Now I am no longer allowed to get less than about 6 hours of sleep because of how it effects my mood.
I love making a difference in the lives of my customers. It's the best thing in the world when a customer makes a return trip to my office to tell me how I've helped him/her.
What is the worst?
Being a manager blows sometimes. I know it's all part of the job, but it's not always a good time.
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why?
No idea. I don't sleep all too well as it is, so it all seems like one sleepless night. Ha. I'm sure some point in college tops the list of hours spent awake on purpose.
ETA- spelling corrections.
I work at a bank and the absolute best thing about my job is my customers!
the worst thing about my job is always having to be up on my product knowledge, especially when detecting fraud. rather it be currency, checks, or money orders.
the longest i have gone without sleep sleep would be 6 months. thats because after i had my kids, they both stayed up all night until they were about 6 month old.
I absolutely loved working at a bank! I still see some of regular customers out and about and it always makes my day. I just wish there was more money to be a teller, I would do it again!
2. I hate all the meetings and having to prove that we are good teachers. I understand that something should be done to make sure there aren't crap teachers out there, but it always feels like (in our school and community, at least) we aren't treated as professionals, as trusted people, as though everything we do is never good enough or appreciated.
3. I don't really remember. With 2 kids, I know I've had many months without a full night's sleep.
I know I'm late...
What is your favorite thing about your job? My CWs. We have a group that hang out outside of work. they are probably my closest friends.
What is the worst? My boss. He's a micromanager and now I have to document all convos with him because he forgets what he tells me. I got dinged on my eval, because I had to leave for ML before a report was done. he forgot the week leading up he changed his mind on who should do my job when I was 39 weeks. So I thought training him was more important that a report that anyone could tweak.
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? 36 hours - labor/delievery
