Re: GTKY

  • 1. I work at a small nonprofit and have lots of different responsibilities. My favorite job is visiting schools to talk with kids about what we do. I also love my job's flexibility.

    2. The flip side of the flexibility is that I often need to work long hours or bring my work home. This has led to some fighting with H, who has a union job with very set hours and little to no take-home stress.

    3. In college I did a 24 hour dance marathon to raise money for AIDS research. I was probably up for 30 hours that day. It was rough!
  • 1.  I'm also in the nonprofit sector but work at a big organization.  I LOVE the mission and that I get to be a small part of saving and improving the lives of children and families.  I also love what I do, and enjoy having the responsibility of connecting donors with the impact of their generosity, in ways big and small.  And I love the people I've had the opportunity to meet along the way, from patients and philanthropists and even a few celebrities.

    2.  The micromanagement and that everything has a sense of urgency.  The amount of email I get on weekends and in the middle of the night is astounding.

    3.  Yikes.  I like sleep way to much to miss a full night's rest.  So, probably when traveling?  I usually medicate but still don't sleep well on planes.  We went to New Zealand and Australia for our honeymoon, and the total travel time home was close to 30 hours.

  • 1. I work as a physical therapist in an outpatient orthopedics practice.  I love that I work for a really small company where quality is valued, and that I can connect with my patients and help them reach their goals.

    2. Insurance companies!!  I waste so many hours every week dealing with writing notes for insurance companies, and fighting to get care that people deserve.  PT is so cheap compared to other healthcare realms ($60-100/visit vs hundreds for specialists and thousands for imaging or surgeries) so I have no idea why they are so stingy.

    3. Probably 20 hours on a day I had to get up really early and then went out really late that night (in college, not recent haha) Although even in college I was a pretty regular "in bed by 10" kind of a person.
  • 1. I'm a lawyer - most of my practice is general corporate, M&A, and tax (especially non-profit).  I love my work.  The job is interesting and varied, and I get kind of a high from some of the projects I get to be involved with.  It's pretty cool having in-house counsel at BoA call you in the middle of a deal or whatever.  I'm also blessed to work with a bunch of people that I genuinely like.  And I work for a large firm with (relatively) reasonable hours.  I didn't think such a thing existed in law school, but turns out it does. I'm actually paid significantly more than my H (who also works at a big firm), and my billable hour requirements are 150 hours/year less than his are.  That's around a month less of work.

    2.  I hate the billable hour.  That's the center of any private legal practice, but it's really annoying to have to justify my time in tenths of the hour (6-minute increments).  It's also frustrating to have clients who don't understand just how much work their particular situation can involve.  Thankfully, this firm tends to deal with more sophisticated clients, but we still have the smaller ones on occasion who just don't understand that their poor record keeping or their accountant's laziness on their tax return ends up creating a LOT of work for us.  And yes, it really did take me 7 hours to get through your file and piece together what all the numbers meant since your business doesn't follow any accounting method we've ever seen before.

    3. I've never pulled an all-nighter.  The longest I've been up was probably 21 or 22 hours on the way back from Rome due to multiple flight delays.

What is your favorite thing about your job? As sad as this sounds, the paycheck and the benefits. I pretty much make the salary for our household (DH is a public school teacher in the city and usually is laid off every June and rehired about 2 days before the school year starts) and I carry all of the medical/dental benefits for the family. Co-workers, boss, and flexibility are 2nd.
What is the worst? The department I work for (finance)- they're much more concerned about the bottom line than the clinical side of the house (which is more interesting, but makes less $).
What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? When DD#1 was born. I was awake the morning before she was born at 7am, went to the hospital that day at 6pm. She was born about 6 hours later at 12:04am, and we didn't shut our eyes until 4pm or so that day. Almost 36 hours awake as a first time mom with a newborn (recipe for disaster).

  • What is your favorite thing about your job? Interacting daily with the students and getting to be a dorm parent.

What is the worst? It only being part time and it feeling pretty pointless

What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? In high school I suffered form depression and severe anxiety. There were definitely times I was up in 40 hour stretches. I have never tried to pull an all night-er for fun or school. I am happier when I sleep.

  • 1. I'm an executive assistant at a quasi-non profit, quasi-local government entity that has about 30 employees. I handle a wide range of duties, but my favorite is the graphic design work. I've updated all of our maps and brochures and totally redesigned our quarterly magazine. Today I'm working on the annual report which will be used with the big three ratings agencies to secure bond savings. (the benefits are amazing too, no premium insurance which covers everything and a 5 year vesting pension)

    2. I'm the go-to scapegoat for all the executives. If they've forgotten to register for something, waited until the last minute for travel arrangements, or let the ball drop on planning a training, I usually get a "well you need to remind me to do these things!"

    3. Probably around 30 hours when I was travelling to Tanzania for a 2 month service trip. I was travelling alone at 18 and it was only my second time flying, so I was awake the whole time. Thankfully I got to Tanzania in the evening, so I went to bed and had very little trouble adjusting to the time difference.
  • My favorite thing is getting to interact with some really big head honchos on a daily basis.

The worst is my direct supervisor- she is fantastic in a lot of ways but she doesn't know how to leave her personal drama at home and will call in or come in really late frequently.

The longest without sleep for me would the nightmare trip (only one bad one out of several) from Utah to Texas with a puppy who had to stop every ten minutes and then breaking down halway with an impending snowstorm. That was a fun 30+ hours.

  • What is your favorite thing about your job?  The insurance and benefits I get.  Also, the people I work with, and the friendships I have made while starting with the company.

What is the worst?  The direction the company is going.  I work for a bank.  couple years ago they merged 2 big banks together, and ever since, slowly things have been changing.  We are in the process of TTC, so I am waiting it out, and hope to find something new after (fingers crossed) my maternity leave.

What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why?  Close to 48 hours.  I was traveling, all alone from Poland, and was supposed to have a direct flight to Newark NJ.  For what ever reason, flight was cancelled, ended up going to London, missed a flight there, by the time they figured out what's next and put me up in a hotel room, just to be back at the airport few hours later.  By the time I got home it was close to 48 hours, and I was ready for bed!!
  • 1. favorite thing about my job? the bonuses when they get paid out, good medical care, every is super friendly and overally I like what I do and the fact that I can basically manage things myself without being bothered.

    2. The worst thing about my job? One co-worker in particular. Also the company is very nit-picky on certain things (what we can/can't wear, that we have to punch in/out and the exact time our hours are etc)

    3. Longest time without sleep? I usually get 7-8 hrs a night, so it's very rare for me to get little sleep and I can't even remember the last time that was. I NEED my sleep!

Favorite thing about my job: I work for a large-cap multinational CPG company. My current job is the first job I've had where I actually enjoy what I'm doing! My group is a small internal consulting group which develops cash flow optimization opportunities for our businesses (both domestic and international). Given that, I have traveled quite a bit which is fun - I've been to Russia, Turkey, France, Spain, UK, Australia, China, India, UAE, Egypt, Pakistan, Chile, Argentina, Brazil & Mexico (most recently suffered from Montezuma's Revenge 2 weeks ago). However, I just got promoted which means I will be starting my new job next month! I will be trading foreign exchange to hedge volatility and risk for company. My current boss is a wonderful person whom I genuinely enjoy being around, which makes leaving my position so hard.

Least favorite thing about my job: The long hours, frequent weekend and evening calls & emails, and the high stress level. I am trying to learn how to manage the stress better. I also wish I went home from work every day feeling like I had done something positive for the world, not just for my company. My husband is a high school administrator and I live vicariously through him in this department.

Longest time without sleep: I think probably on my most recent flight from Brazil. Despite the fact that I had a bed on the plane, really bad turbulence always makes for very little sleep!
  • What is your favorite thing about your job?
I work for a committee that ensures regulatory compliance with biomedical research, which I find really interesting. I also love that it's a desk job. My previous job as a lab assistant had me on my feet all day long.

    What is the worst?
I took a pay cut and benefit cut when I took this job and it still bothers me, months later. We're doing okay financially now but I'm worried we will be struggling once baby comes.

What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why?
Hmm..probably about 36 hours. It was the last night of my Freshman year of college and my friends and I stayed up all night and then had to move home. I was so awake from how much fun we had and the moving that I didn't sleep for awhile. I don't think I could do that again!

  • I work for a medium sized engineering firm in a project support role (not an engineer).  My favorite thing about my current job is my coworkers are awesome and great to work with.  I'm also not micro-managed at all, which drives me nuts.

My least favorite thing about my current job is I am just not busy enough.  I know that is kind of a "luxury" thing to complain about, but it seriously drives me nuts.  I'm happiest and most productive in jobs where, at least most days, I have impossible mountains to move before the day ends at 5 but still vanquish Mt. Paperwork Everest the majority of the time.

The longest I went without sleep was when I was managing a RaceTrac gas station/convenience store.  I was already scheduled to work the swing shift, plus the first shift the next morning.  Then, my overnight manager didn't show up, and she was the ONLY one scheduled to work that shift.  So, I ended up having to work from 2PM on Friday all the way through 11AM on Saturday.  And that was also on my feet the whole time, for almost 24 hours.

  • 1. I'm a CPA for a large public accounting firm.  I am always learning and being challenged, and I do feel like I am getting better at my job every day.  I couldn't do the same thing every day or feel bored.  I also have a lot of flexibility now in terms of working from home or just being out of the office for kid stuff, but of course I do have to work nights/weekends to make that schedule work.  I also think I am paid well for what I do.

    2. It is a high-pressure, client-service industry so I do feel stressed a lot of the time.  There is also always a lot of work to do, so I don't think I've ever felt "done" with my work in about 5 years :)  And like PP, I work based on chargeable hours, and tracking your time is a pain.

    3.  When I was in high school and college, I worked as a police dispatcher for a couple different towns.  I would work back to back shirts (like 11PM-3PM), then have one shift off, then do 11p-3p again.  I did that frequently and somehow survived, but I don't think I could do that now.

  • Favorite thing about my job:  We have a decent benefits package and a lot of additional 'perks', such as occasional free tickets to local events, employee appreciation days, etc.  Plus they are paying for my college courses!!!  Also, I work for a community bank.  The family that started the bank has always placed a major focus on giving back to the community and being involved, being a good neighbor.  The bank sticks to those core values to this day, and I am so proud to work for a place that has such a respected position in our community and believes in giving back through donations and volunteerism.

Least favorite thing about my job:  Some of my coworkers endlessly get on my nerves.  It's frustrating to see people that have worked here 20 years and know that I am way ahead of them performance-wise.  However, I always remind myself that a large portion of the current staff is within 10 years of retirement, so I could be running the place some day ;-).

Longest time without sleep:  In high school, we used to have all night RPG sessions.  More recently, I stay up for about 30 hours once a year in June for our Relay for Life event, since I am our team captain.  Then I go home and sleep the whole weekend.

What is your favorite thing about your job? I love my co-workers. I really enjoy working with the people I'm around.

What is the worst? There is a lot of high school type drama at my work and a lot of favoritism. It can be really frustrating and takes a lot away from employees that aren't in the clique. Edited to add: I also cannot stand how many people do not read stuff that is sent out!! I spend a lot of time answering questions that were answered in my inital email if they would just read.

What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? Ah I have no idea. I love sleep, so I usually try to get at least 8 hours. I haven't pulled an all nighter in years. Most likely it was for a sleep over or something silly when I was younger.
  • What is your favorite thing about your job?  I like the challenges of designing things for the Global market.

What is the worst? We are the bastard group of our company and the rest of our Division can't see that we are no longer just focused on NAFTA and our true growth will be international.  The CEO and our owners understand this, but the working stiffs don't understand this.

What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? 36 plus hours a few times in the Navy.  There was a few weeks that we had calculated that most of us had been working roughly 108 hours over those weeks, I had to work more because of what I was in charge of.  Now I am no longer allowed to get less than about 6 hours of sleep because of how it effects my mood.

What is your favorite thing about your job?
I love making a difference in the lives of my customers. It's the best thing in the world when a customer makes a return trip to my office to tell me how I've helped him/her.

    What is the worst?
Being a manager blows sometimes. I know it's all part of the job, but it's not always a good time.

What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why?
No idea. I don't sleep all too well as it is, so it all seems like one sleepless night. Ha. I'm sure some point in college tops the list of hours spent awake on purpose.
    ETA- spelling corrections.

What is your favorite thing about your job? Being at home with my son and watching him learn, and play.

What is the worst? No break.

What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? 24-36 hours probably when we went to the hospital for the induction. I'm a baby, I need sleep or I get really bitchy.

  • 1 - I stay home full time with DD and I work part time teaching violin and viola lessons and also playing in a trio at about 40 events per year.  My favorite part is watching DD grow and enjoy this time with her while I can.  I do feel lucky I get to do this.  My favorite part about my music business is I'm my own boss and I really enjoy it so it doesn't feel like a job to me.  I enjoy watching my students become better musicians and I also enjoy playing music for peoples weddings.

2 - With DD she is very strong willed and hard to parent.  I'm pretty much exhausted by bedtime.  Terrible 2's, Terrible 3's - they have sucked pretty bad for me.  With my music there really is not a worst part at all.  Occasionally I will run into a bitchy client but that's about it.

3 - 3 days - It was after a new years eve party and I won't go into details - it was a very long time ago :)

  • I work at a bank and the absolute best thing about my job is my customers!

the worst thing about my job is always having to be up on my product knowledge, especially when detecting fraud. rather it be currency, checks, or money orders.

the longest i have gone without sleep sleep would be 6 months. thats because after i had my kids, they both stayed up all night until they were about 6 month old.

I absolutely loved working at a bank! I still see some of regular customers out and about and it always makes my day. I just wish there was more money to be a teller, I would do it again! :)
  • 1. I love my coworkers and the benefits of being a teacher--summers off (sort of, I teach summer school), good insurance, etc.

    2. I hate all the meetings and having to prove that we are good teachers. I understand that something should be done to make sure there aren't crap teachers out there, but it always feels like (in our school and community, at least) we aren't treated as professionals, as trusted people, as though everything we do is never good enough or appreciated.

    3. I don't really remember. With 2 kids, I know I've had many months without a full night's sleep.
  • I know I'm late...

What is your favorite thing about your job? My CWs.  We have a group that hang out outside of work.  they are probably my closest friends.

What is the worst? My boss.  He's a micromanager and now I have to document all convos with him because he forgets what he tells me.  I got dinged on my eval, because I had to leave for ML before a report was done.  he forgot the week leading up he changed his mind on who should do my job when I was 39 weeks.  So I thought training him was more important that a report that anyone could tweak.

What is the longest you have gone without sleep and why? 36 hours - labor/delievery
