QOTD 3/25

I heard this morning that Angelina Jolie had another cancer preventative surgery.  If you had the cancer screening and the results said that you were at a high risk for getting cancer would you have the surgeries?

  • I read the article and loved it.  She was like BEYOND high risk factor I think, and one of the doctors told her some of her signs indicated early cancer.  With all her kids and her mother dying young from the same thing, I would have done exactly the same thing if I was in her shoes.

  • If I had a family history like hers, tested positive for the gene, and was showing markers for early cancer I would definitely consider this at any time. At this time, when I'm not sure if we will be OAD or not, I still would consider it. Only because I have 7 embryos frozen. I think it takes a major discussion between myself, lots of doctors, and my family.

  • Totally agree @islandmonkey8, there are so many factors that weigh into a decision like that.  No matter what, it's a tough one.

  • I've had a cancer scare and it was one of the scariest things I've been through, so I can't see why I wouldn't do what she did.

  • I think I would do it.
  • I would. My mom had a bi-lateral mastectomy when she finished BF'ing me. She has a strong history of breast cancer in her family. Her mom had the same thing done and still found precancerous cells behind her nipple. My mom has recently had genetic testing done. The genes they can test for all came back negative. If she'd been positive, I would have gotten the test done. If it had been positive, I would have had it done after kids.

  • Yup...if I had a BRCA mutation and her family history I would have them take everything out, breasts, ovaries, fallopian tubes. I may weigh the options of doing it before or after having kids, but I'd freeze my eggs and use a surrogate or adopt if my risk was high and it needed it to be done ASAP.

  • I totally would.
