Feeling panicky

Hi! I haven't posted anywhere close to the knot or the nest since I got married last April, but I got some news today and don't know where else to turn.  As a bit of backstor my husband and I got married 4/5/2014.   I am 33 YO and my DH is 35 YO.  I went off of BC when we returned from our honeymoon and got my period normally until September when it just stopped until early January 2015.   I saw my gyno and she referred me to an RE who we saw in early March.   Fast forward through the awful ultrasound and the doctor tells us that I have PCOS.   I had my first round of Clomid with Metformin and nothing and he jacked up the metformin and had me do another round of Clomid.   I had more bloodwork and another ultrasound this morning and they called and told me that while there is a follicle growing, its not growing fast enough or high enough and the doctor wants to put me on an injectable medication (I didn't get the name but I am guessing ovidrel based upon google searches).

I am terrified of needles and have an awful time giving blood for the testing (the poor phlebotomist!).   I am just really freaking out that the clomid isn't working and that the doctor is jacking up my dosages again.   Everyone I know that has gone on clomid has had no problems with it so I feel alone and terrified.    Also, I am a little unnerved because the doctor never really mentioned what we would do if the clomid didn't work.

Long story short...I am scared shitless and could use some helpful advice from anyone who has experienced this

Re: Feeling panicky

  • I've known plenty of people that didn't succeed on clomid alone, myself included. Injectable meds could be various things. Ovidrel is one shot, one time. I've had it done in office and done myself. Being diagnosed with a form of infertility means lots of blood work. Being pregnant also means a fair amount of blood work. And unless you go natural and aren't gbs positive then labor means lots of needles as well. So, at some point you will have to deal with needles. Close your eyes and look away. And I would be willing to bet that the others didn't have PCOS while taking clomid. PCOS puts you on a different playing field. Though if it helps I did not have PCOS and clomid got me pregnant twice but also increased my loss of risk, which was already high, so I lost those two pregnancies. Bad combo that the OB wasn't wise enough to avoid. I had some clomid cycles that just flat out didn't work as well. Take a deep breath and talk things out with your dr.

  • I had to do injections last month, the needle is really small, you'll be fine.

  • Clomid does not work on me. It doesn't work on everyone. Injects aren't that bad. Once you get past the first. Odds are it is not Ovidrel your doctor wants to move you to as Ovidrel is a trigger shot. One time, it forces ovulation 36 hours later.

  • If you don't feel you are ready for injections, you can ask your doctor about possibly trying Femara. I don't personally have experience with either but I know a lot of women on the PCOS forum I am on have had more success with Femara than Clomid.

  • Don't panic! Like pps said, Clomid doesn't work for everyone. It didn't work for me. I moved on to injectables after 2 failed clomid cycles (and REALLY bad side effects) and honestly, they were SO much better than the Clomid crazies. I barely felt the needles (sometimes not at all), had zero side effects and it was a piece of cake. IF you do end up going down that route, don't worry! Your hubby can give you the shots! Just ask your RE for subcutaneous ones if at all possible and it'll be super easy. I am awful at bloodwork, but these shots are nothing like that.

Unfortunately, our full injectables cycle failed so we moved to a diff RE and are now doing Femara plus injectables. I've responded best to this protocol. We did two cycles (that unfortunately failed) and have one left "in the bank" before we're staring at IVF. You might ask your doc about a combo like that. It's only a few shots vs a full protocol of them. My last two cycles, I did the femara and only had 4 shots plus the trigger shot.

Don't panic! Just take it one day at a time and see what your doc has to say. And if you end up going down the needle road, I promise the anticipation of giving yourself the shots is FAR worse than the actual shots. You'll do fine!

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!
