As most of you know, we have been saving and planning for the front porch that we want to have built. This morning, our contractor called to say that he doesn't believe there is any room within the city setback rules to build a structure on the front of our house. We are really super disappointed. By the way we read the rules, it really seemed like we wouldn't have a problem building the porch. H met with the city planner and he said we could use a metal detector/hire a surveyor to find the exact locations of boundaries and we may be able to build something on a smaller scale. We will probably have to apply for a variance though. Apparently, we are in a tricky location because we are on a corner that has a dead end and an undeveloped road on one side.
Super bummed, but hoping we will be able to salvage our plans and figure out something that will work, even if its not our dream porch! I guess the silver lining is that it will end up costing less money! So maybe we'll be able to side the whole house this year.
Re: Sort of MM related--complaining
Oh no! Hopefully you all can get the variance and still do something.
I had something similar happen recently, though on a much smaller scale. A local neighborhood association was giving away trees for people to plant in front of their house to beautify the area. My DH and I were so excited to put a pretty tree in front of our house.
Our front yard is miniscule, so we were going to put it on the other side of the sidewalk, by the road. Except when we started trying to decide where it should go, there was nowhere to put it that wouldn't have "hit" something or had the possibility of roots growing into the water or sewer line
. So my DH got permission from a neighbor a street away to plant it in front of her house. At least it went to a good home!
