Don't Know What to Do

A little over a year ago we got H a secured card with Capital One. Everything has been fine and we have managed to improve his credit scores with it. So, we applied and were approved for an unsecured rewards card with Capital One. Now, we can't activate this new card and can't use the original card because they put a fraud hold on the account. H called to verify whatever they needed to over the phone and get the hold lifted. They said he needed to fax his Driver's License, his Social Security card, and a recent bank statement or recent pay stub. I get the ID part, but we really aren't comfortable with the other stuff. What would you do? Will this show up on his credit reports? How does it show on the reports that he was approved but it hasn't been activated- will a new account show or no?

Re: Don't Know What to Do

  • I've NEVER heard of having to provide that to open a credit card or to clear a fraud alert.  Can you call Capital One from a number you KNOW is for them?  Are you sure the card you have is a legit card and not an imposter with a fake number?

  • The number we used is the one listed in their mobile app. There's a whole notification on the website and app saying their is a hold and call this number, so at least I know it is them.

  • Are you sure the app and website is legit?  Faudsters are good at making a website and app look legit when there is something very small that most people miss when examining it.

  • I've has the app on my phone for the whole time we've had the secured card, but how would I know for sure on the website?

  • Just double check the web address and make sure it is the same as the secured site.

I would also call again tomorrow and speak with someone else, I can't think of a reason they need that much information because of a fraud alert on a second credit card.

  • Has his SSN been compromised that you're aware of?  That may be why they need verification of SSN, but I can't lie, I wouldn't be comfortable faxing my social security card anywhere.
  • I just wouldn't use the card. Continue using the secured card to build his credit instead. Much less room for risk.

  • We can't use either since they are both in his name with Capital One. They have a hold on both. We have an unsecured Credit One that we will just use. We were really excited to build up rewards but I will try again in a few months with another company. How much time should there be between hard inquiries?

I am running into this with PayPal right now, and there's no way I'm sharing it. In general, Capital One has good customer service, so I would call again, say you're not comfortable facing the SSN, and try to find some other options.
  • Yeah, no way would I be sending anybody a copy of my social security card.  If it doesn't get sorted out w/ Capital One, I would try to get a card from somebody else.  This is the strangest thing I've ever heard of.
  • I would also order your husband's credit report to make sure there isn't anything on there that shouldn't be. You can order a free copy from each of the 3 companies once a year from www.annualcreditreports.com.

I would be concerned too about the documents they are asking for. There should be other documents you can submit like utility bills or tax bills (with SS# blacked out).

  • I would NOT send them all of the items they are reqesting. Doesn't seen ligit to me.

  • I wouldn't send this stuff over either.

However, they already have his legal name, SSN, DOB, address, etc. if he has a credit card with them.  You have to provide all of that to get approved.

They don't have a bank statement.  And I would not send them one.  It's not like you're applying for a mortgage here.

Call them back and ask again why they need it.

Usually fraud alerts can be cleared by answering some security questions over the phone (ie: confirming info the CC company already has about you like your address or your mother's maiden name).
