Checking, Savings & Fun Money

On the hunt for a bank that allows you to have a combined checking/savings account for you & your husband, but then also offers
individual accounts for fun money spending?  Or at least lets you automatically deposit $$ from the initial checking acct into the fun money accts?
Trying to find one that doesn't involve lots of hidden fees.
Thanks!

Re: Checking, Savings & Fun Money

  • We do that system with Chase, I want to stay you can have an unlimited number of accounts with them, but don't hold me to that. We have three checking accounts (1 joint, 2 separate (we can't see each others)) and 2 savings accounts (efund and savings goals).

  • We have that same set-up through our local credit union. DH and I have a joint account, but then several individual accounts as well. We can easily transfer money from one account to another without a problem.

We have a joint checking and a joint savings account, and DH and I both have 2 individual savings accounts and one checking account.
  • Pretty much any bank should let you do this.  The only question is whether their online platform allows you to see all accounts at once when you login.  Most should.

  • We have that through Huntington. Savings, joint checking, and two individual checking accounts. No fees on any of them. No interest either, but to be honest, we don't keep enough in the accounts where the interest would be very much, so I'm happy with just no fees.

  • MW and I have two individual checking accounts, my own savings account, a joint checking account and two joint savings accounts.  We can see our individual accounts and the joint accounts but not the others account.
  • we are with a credit union and here is what we have - joint checking, joint savings, annual savings, emergency fund, home improvement fund, minor savings account, business checking for me, business savings for me and credit card for me.  I don't have a separate checking account anymore for fun money because it seems after kids we just don't spend much money in that anymore.  Less than $20 in "entertainment" for us, $150 eating out, we don't have a fun category anymore.

  • I keep my mad money in a traditional bank account, but H uses Google Wallet and really likes it. Transfers are incredibly easy and funds are immediately available.

Yep, we do that with Chase. We have a joint checking, joint savings. Two individual accounts, and H has an individual savings for mortgage(but I just log in to his account to see it, i really need to get on that acct.) makes it easy to transfer money.... Chase has a great mobile app that makes it easy.
  • Almost any bank will do this for you.
However, some banks have a fee IF you do not have a minimum balance in your checking accounts.
We operate out of a number of banks and find it easy to do so, butg I realize that many do not want this approach.

Bank  #1 - joint savings, joint checking (for household expenses), and also my personal savings account (3 accounts)
Bank #2 - DH personal savings and personal checking account (2 accounts)
Bank #3 - Savings and checking for house related expenses (2 accounts)
Bank 4 # - Long term savings for cars, vacations and other more costly items (1 account)
    Bank #5 - Emergency fund (1 account)

We pay no fees at any of the banks - but we keep more than the minimum on all checking accounts at all times.

Investments are with a non bank institution
  • I would think most banks would do this.  I suppose maybe some banks would charge for internal transfers; ours doesn't.

You probably won't be able to see each other's accounts that are individual.

  • Our credit Union allows this. We have a checking and savings with them. Then trey have these "special" accounts you can open up that are pretty much just different folders to put your money in without opening a bunch of additional accounts. They allow 3, and we can transfer within tgem the same as you would with any other account.
