Did you have braces? Did DH?

I did for like 2.5 years from the beginning of 4th grade until the end of 6th grade. I had a permanent retainer behind my bottom teeth until I was a senior in college. I wore my removable retainers at night until I was like 25...I figured it'd be safe to not wear it anymore by then. Good thing I didn't throw my retainers out though, because now my teeth are starting to shift again.

H didn't have braces, but definitely needed to. His parents didn't like what the orthodontist told them and then never followed up to get another opinion or do anything about it. Now his teeth are really terrible

Dh never had them but I did. I got them put on when I was 20. I had jaw reconstruction to go along with them. Now I am the talk of the dentists office when I get certain x-rays done because you can see all of the plates and screws in my face.

Nope. I could have used them but my teeth aren't too bad for not using them.

Neither of us had them although I really wish I would have gotten them. My teeth are one of my biggest insecurities and I'm hoping to do something about them in the next year or so. H has great teeth, so he lucked out.

No to both. I'm shocked I never needed any hardware. I feel like I was always at the dentist as a kid.

I have braces for about 9 months in 6th grade. I wore my retainer every night until I went to college.

H never had braces. His teeth are pretty good.

H did. He didn't continue wearing his retainer and now could use them again. I lucked out and have excellent teeth . A lot of people think I've had braces.

I think I answered this in my mind but never typed it out lol.

Neither had them, but H needed to. Actually, he probably needed a reconstruction of his jaw, but didn't do it.

ETA - Army was going to do it, but they said it was a 2 year recovery!

@mana8503 DH has a crooked jaw and the dr said they could "fix" it but they'd have to break it first--so he never did. I'm glad bc I like his little crooked jaw

@ramstein1027 - Yea, H has a severe under bite. They would have to break it and take some off the bottom I think. He was looking into it before he got out of the army. They told him he'd be able to run if he did it. He's like um, I've been in the army for 10 years, I have no problem running. He ended up getting the sinus surgery, but not the jaw stuff.

When we were teenagers, the orthodontist told H that he needed to have that jaw surgery too (break the jaw and reconstruct). His parents didn't like that and never got a second opinion. So now H has really terrible teeth and, because they're overcrowded, he gets cavities all the time. He definitely should have gotten that taken care of years ago because I'm really afraid that he's going to have lots of problems in the future.

Okay, as someone who has had the surgery, there is not a two year recovery. It doesn't take a long to be able to eat certain foods again, like bagels, apple or carrots. I originally had a workup done by a local surgeon who said that he would absolutely not take my case and told me not to go to any doctor in my county. I ended up going to a surgeon that was over an hour away and it was totally worth going to him.

I have to admit it is a big surgery with certain risks. I personally have no feeling in my lower lip, some of portions of my gums and half the roof of my mouth.

If anyone wants more info, let me know.
