Walmart Family Mobile or other inexpensive phone plans?

Does anyone have an inexpensive data plan? I currently only have talk and text through AT&T. I'd like to look into a data plan. I'm ok if it's limited....I wont use it all the time (I say that now...haha). I see Walmart has a $30/month plan but don't know much about it. Does anyone use an inexpensive plan, like Walmart, Straight Talk, etc? Thanks!

  • I have Virgin Mobile. I pay $45 month for unlimited data & texting plus 1200 minutes. I had to buy my phone outright--I have an LG Volt I got on sale at Best Buy for $80. I am curious to see if anyone else knows of a better plan. I would really like an Iphone, but I don't want to get involved with a major carrier again.

We're locked into our Sprint plan (fortunately, I get reimbursed $75/mo by my employer and we some discount because a family member works at their corporate headquarters), but I'd be interested in trying one of these low cost carriers eventually.  I like to lurk the mrmoneymustache.com forums, and found this there:  http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/share-your-badassity/communications-tech-son-of-the-superguide!/

    Good luck!!

I lurk those forums too! Though I'm nowhere near as badass as those people.

My boss uses Republic Wireless and loves it. It is SUPER cheap, but the smartphone only functions where there is wifi. Call and text works everywhere, and for her that's enough.

  • We use Republic. You have to buy the phones at full cost upfront, but we only pay $20/month for plans for 2 phones with unlimited talk and text. We only get data with a wifi connection. We could get unlimited 3G plans for $50/month or unlimited 4G plans for $80/month, but we are generally fine only having a data plan when wifi is available. We also have the option to change plans up to 2 times per month and get charged a pro rated amount. We have taken advantage of that when we were going to be traveling and might like to use a data plan to look for directions or other travel related info.
  • I had Straight Talk for about a year.  It was okay, but I didn't really have date with it.

I then switched to Walmart Family Mobile...I think that is what it is called, although I wasn't on a family plan.  It was TERRIBLE.  SO AWFUL.  I cannot more strongly advise you against them.  At the time, they were $30/mo. for unlimited talk/text and an additional $15/mo. for unlimited data with some of it being at 4G speeds.

I live right in the heart of a medium sized metropolitan city and the data for my plan either wouldn't work at all or it would work for a few minutes at a time and then drop off.  And it was NEVER at a 4G speed.

After only 6 months, I finally decided I needed to switch again and bite the bullet on paying for yet another new phone.  Then they charged me for an additional six weeks after I switched because they claimed I never informed them to cancel my plan...even though I had and they even admitted they knew I had canceled my plan from when the line switched over.

Okay, Walmart cell service rant over.

I now have Metro PCS.  They are fantastic!!!  I've had them over a year and no problems at all.  Plus they are cheap.  I have their $40/plan, which includes unlimited calling, texting, and data.  The date is at 4G speeds up to 2GB and is unlimited after that (per month) at 3G speeds.  Plus, about six months after I got their service, they raised my data to 4G speed up to 4GB/mo. for no extra charge.  Just for being a loyal customer.

Thanks for the above response. I dont know anyone who actually tried Walmart and now I'm done considering it. I'm going to check into Metro...thanks again!

  • If you don't go to one of the major providers, check online for reviews for reception and also find out what their policy is for cancelling should you get poor reception where you live. The reason I bring this up is that we have several small cell phone providers where I live that I think are just local, their reception once you get of the main area is sometimes bad and if you travel a lot, you want something you can use anywhere. Heck I had that problem with t-mobile who is a major carrier. I was constently loosing service in my own home & there was nothing they could do to fix it. All they would offer me is if I returned my phones they wouldn't charge me a cancel fee. However I was out the money I paid for the phones, accessories (charger, case) and the start up fee.

  • I use a Trac Fone plan - a basic phone and purchase minutes/time card for talk and text. (They offer data as well, but I do not use my phone much and data is not needed)
My particular phone minutes/time card plan runs me about $10 a month - but the card is a # of minutes for a specified period of time. There are multiple choices available.
