Late W2

We got our taxes done in early March.  Last week we got a W2 in the mail.  Back in the summer, we got a lump sum deposit from the Army (H was enlisted, and got out 2 years ago).  I guess they did an audit on H's pay and found a huge discrepancy.  I looked over the paperwork, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it, and figured if it was taxed, we'd get a W2.  When we didn't, I thought it was probably BAH related.

Shouldn't this have been sent in January?  I have the envelope with postage saying 3/26/2014.

Is there anything I can do since they were 2 months past the deadline for W2s?  We're going to be out $100 for an amendment.

Re: Late W2

  • I don't have an answer to your question, unfortunately.  But can really commiserate.  I have a mortgage and a HELOC with the same bank.  They didn't send me the tax stuff in regards to interest for EITHER of those.

Then, I have a steady part-time job...though I am an independent contractor.  And they haven't sent me my 1099 either.  So aggravating.  And now I need to get my taxes done pronto.  I should have bugged them earlier.  My bad.

  • If I were your position I would contact the IRS directly and get their advise. You obviously aren't trying to hide income and you want to do the right thing. The IRS reps may be able to tell you if there is a way to re-file without having to pay the fee.

  • You could file the 1040x by yourself. An amendment has to be mailed in anyways. Assuming the extra income doesn't put you into an different tax bracket or disqualify you from some credits, it wouldn't be that hard. Or you can wait for the IRS to catch it. They will send you a letter saying you had this unreported income and now you owe us x dollars. Assuming you agree, you can just mail them a check then. But they might assess some interest.
  • I just paid to have her do it.  H is picking up the packet after work, so we'll see if it changed anything.  My list is a mile long to do, and I'm so busy at work.  I'm just aggravated the gov't can't keep to their own datelines.
