Tipsy Tuesday!

Sorry to disappoint but I don't mean the drinking tipsy ;-)

Since the board has been kind of slow recently I figured we can start a little conversation full of tips for each other.

Here you can list any tips you have or wish you knew about when you were pregnant, for newborns, first time moms, babies first year, moms with multiple children, etc

Also if you have any questions that pop into your head you can list them here to.

  • Love this idea!

I'm currently working on our hospital bag and I keep feeling like I'm missing something.  For those of you that have already given birth, what are the key items you brought or wished you had brought?

I wish I had brought my own towels. The hospital towels were miniature and felt like sandpaper.

I should have left my boppy at home. We were in the hospital for five days and I didn't use it once.

  • @mrshall1027 the one thing I brought that was the best decision was my own pillow and robe.
I could have left home: nightgowns, warm socks, underwear.
I second looney life about the towels. Also bring your own toiletries.

  • For moms or new moms:
Keep your kindle or iPad near you at all times. I read the entire time I'm nursing. It keeps me up but also helps me fall asleep faster at night.

When I was toward the end of my pregnancy all I wanted was to be massaged. I highly recommend indulging in a foot massage or back massage as often as possible. People also say that massages help relax you to induce labor.

Definitely bringing our own towels and pillows.  Also, have my robe packed.

Did you just wear what the hospital provides the whole time?  That's the part I'm having the most trouble with because I don't have anything that I wouldn't mind getting stained, but I also don't want to go out and buy anything.

  • I preferred the hospital gown bc I did stain it both days and didn't care. Also it made it easier to breast feed. I just put my robe on when I had guests.

  • I <3 this idea!

I have zero experiences to share, but I'm hoarding all the tips :D

my biggest dilemma right now is when to tell my boss.  He and I work closely together (the two of us run all the non-industry sponsored research in our department) and I'm key on several projects where some one will likey need some training to deal with me being out.  He's the MD who comes-up with a lot of the research plans and I'm the one who basically runs them once the two of us have gotten them funded.

I'm headed to a conference with him in a few weeks (at that point I'd be 7w2d).  Most of the time these conferences start out with dinner and drinks...where I've been known to down several martinis. do I tell him before we leave? or do I chance that he figures it out on his own...or questions me on it? If it weren't for this conference I was planning on telling him sometime after 8 weeks since we will have to come-up with a pretty major game-plan to deal with my leave.

  • @formerlyGDaisy09 if you are comfortable telling him before the conference I would. Only because you don't want him to say anything uncomfortable in front of other people.

Thanks...My thinking is that I'd rather be the one to tell him, instead of having him figure me out. he's a fairly bold person and I wouldn't put it past him to blurt something out after a few drinks. he's going on vacation for the next 10 days so my secret is at least safe until just before this conference.

  • re: hospital bag - Since I ended up with an unplanned cs, I was very happy to have my own clothes with me. Super soft and comfy pjs, nursing tanks, and a robe. I absolutely agree about your own towels. Soft and fluffy is so much better than tough and tiny.

Also the LC at the hospital suggested tanks/bras for nursing instead of staying in the gown.

I used my flip flops instead of slippers as well. This started because my water broke and I didn't want to leak into slippers. I could rinse my flip flops off as necessary.
  • Things I brought that I was glad to bring: Nursing sports bra (wore the whole time under the gown), own toiletries, and DSLR camera rather than just using our phones.
Things I wish I had brought:  A swaddle or sleep sack for her to be in.  She was insanely long, and we couldn't get her to not break out of the receiving blanket swaddle.  So she would constantly wake up. Our roughest nights were in the hospital.  At home where it was warm and cozy, she did better.

Tips I wished someone had given me:
    - Try to push for a 24 hour release if you are feeling well and things are going okay.  We did so much better at home than in the hospital.
    - To go in when you're having strong contractions and not wait for that "5 min apart" rule.

Honestly, I wished just 1 person had told me that labor and birth could be an amazing experience.  All I ever heard was horror stories and how horrible it was.  Go in with zero expectations except to have a baby.

  • Can some of you mama's talk about your birth prep? Did you do nothing expecting to have an epi or c-section? Did you take a certain class or series of classes? Any books you read?

I'm planning on getting an epi, but I'd like to have some preparation for birth for laboring before the hospital, in case the epi doesn't work, etc.

  • @mseale
I 100% went into this experience knowing I would get an epi. What I didn't expect was to have the epi only numb the contractions but not numb (warning - vulgar) my vagina spread open. I felt that part completely no matter how much epi they gave me. That part was worse than the pushing and contractions combined.
My SIL later told me she had 2 experiences where she felt nothing at all or the 2nd time where she felt the same as me.
I also planned on laboring at home for a while. My labor contractions started pretty fast and I labored at home for about 3 hours before my contractions were so close and strong that we rushed to the hospital. I went from 15 minutes apart to 3 minutes apart in 3 hours.

  • ^Same as her SIL. The first time I felt zero pain, just pressure. The second time I felt that "ring of fire" and I wasn't expecting it, so I cried like a baby while pushing my boy out. It hurt! It was over so quickly though.
