Work Drama (Long)

So this started as a FFFC (see first few sentences). But then I decided to share P's work drama.

I'm tired of P complaining about his boss. He hasn't taken any of my suggestions. Usually I just listen so he can vent. But I get tired of him not doing anything about it. The other night he was complaining about his boss getting on his case for leaving a job and going home in the afternoon instead of back to the office. Not the first time he's done it and the other guys in the office do it to. But hello, maybe if your boss is asking you not to do it, then don't. P's response is that if the other guys are doing it, he will too. And his boss always comforts him via text or email. So it's in writing that's he's asking P not to do that. I suggested that he have a sitdown with his boss. He says he should but then he never does.

I get that P is frustrated with his boss but I don't think he should ignore him. I know I've given some background. But here's a recent ongoing at his office. J was hired a month or so after P transferred here. He rarely goes on calls to job sites unless someone passes a call to him. He doesn't answer his phone at the office. He spends his time in their lab playing with equipment. Has been since he started. Never cleans it up and the lab was a huge mess. Several months ago the office got a letter from corporate about their insane electric bills. J had been leaving his servers in his project running 24/7. Anyone see where this is going? M (the manager) asked him to shut them off at night and to close the network. Because he had it open so he could connect to it from home. Which is a big no no. He didn't.

Long story, I know. Two weeks ago P was sick of the network connectivity issues, so he shut down then reset up their modem, network, ect and put a password on it. He gave the password to M to share as he wanted. It was not shared with J who became angry. J eventually went to M to complain about how he couldn't access the WOW server he had set up any more nor could any of his buddies.

Now P doesn't know what M told him. But seriously??? This guy admitted to playing WOW while at work using work equipment and power. And to allow others to connect to the work network and play WOW and he wasn't fired? And it's been going on for over a year. So that was last week. Last Friday M had someone there and was increasing the security of their network.

This week, J was sent to a client call for a client that has had several calls in the last few weeks. P and another guy at the office N have been the two handling them. M asked P to go and give J some OJT because N refused to go. P went and after an hour or two he asked J if he needed anymore help and left when J said no. This was when he went home early instead of going back to the office. Apparently, according to the other guys at the office, J told them that after P left he decided he was done too. He said he was leaving, the client asked why since the problem wasn't fixed. Things sound like they got heated, because J said he would call security and ask them to walk him out if the client wouldn't let him leave.

Now it's very likely the client called to complain. Which makes it interesting that M later was texting P about leaving early and giving him a hard time. My two cents is that M wants to blame P for not being there to watch over J. P is super pissed saying he isn't a babysitter. But I still feel like P should do as his boss asks and not ignore him. This is also not the first time M has brought up the leaving early or going in late to P.

It sounds crazy and frustrating. But listening to P complain about why his boss sucks as a boss every week is getting on my nerves. Based off what P says about him, it doesn't sound like he is a good boss. But I know how stubborn P is. Since he doesn't agree with his boss, he does what he wants to do then gets angry when his boss calls him on it. He says M never calls anyone else out. I mentioned maybe he does and the other guys just don't tell him about it.

Re: Work Drama (Long)

  • I read this to J. He couldn't believe that he is keeping J on at the company.
  • J should be fired. You are right that P should be listening to his boss. It sounds as if the boss and J have some kind of relationship outside of work that is preventing the boss from firing him. Maybe J and the boss are in-laws, friends from HS, etc. I may be wrong. It seems like the boss would fire P for much less than what he would fire J for.

  • I'm very surprised that J hasn't been fired.  And I have no clue if they know each other outside work.  M is currently out of the office for training these past two weeks and this next week.  He's back on Fridays.  This last Friday it was him, P and J having a meeting and going over the new inventory system that M has been getting trained on.  P brought up the client call and J himself told M what he had done.  P said M was shocked.  So I'm not sure if the client called to complain or not.  He said M asked J if he really said what he said.  J said he did.  Maybe there will be repercussions once M is back from this training?

But I still feel like P should do as M asks.  I wouldn't be causing ripples in the pond with everything else that is going on. P isn't worried about getting fired but when he tells me how he handles things, I get worried about it.  I would never ignore my boss.

  • I would never dream of ignoring my boss. J should be fired, but I've learned from experience, just because a person should be fired, doesn't mean they will be.
