I just submitted my dispute to the IRS

They are trying to disallow the $2,000 education credit I took while I was a full-time student in my last semester of law school.

I just submitted the letter disputing their adjustment.... and attached 25 pages of documentation.  Transcripts, student account records, lender records, emails, etc.  They want documentation?  I can paper them with documentation.

Lesson learned: turns out my record-keeping tendencies that everybody told me were over-compulsive were not so compulsive after all.

It was the lifetime learning credit, and it's from before I was married. I made the payments in 2012, and I claimed them on my 2012 tax return.

EDIT: I did it correctly.  I just got audited, and they sent the original notice to my old apartment back in the fall.  We changed our address with the postal service when we bought the house, but we still never received the original audit letter.  Since I didn't answer that notice, they adjusted my tax return to disallow it and then sent a bill to my new address.

  • It sounds like this dispute should be a slam dunk against the IRS.  Good luck though.
  • Good luck!  I had issues with my student loan interest deduction the final year I paid it.  I had the form that gets mailed to you, but apparently the IRS didn't get the form from the loan servicer so they wouldn't count it no matter how much documention I came up with. :(
