Clomid vision side effects
Hi all, I have posted on here before, but not for a long time. Cliffs notes version: I have PCOS and went off the pill two years ago. My cycles didn't really regulate and I went back on the pill for a few months. Now, I have been off the pill for a year and have had 7 periods in that time, so not awful, but still not consistent enough to get pregnant. A recent transvaginal ultrasound revealed no cysts, but I do have slightly high testosterone. My fasting glucose was 85 so no need for metformin.
My gyn wants to put me on clomid the next time my period starts. I am on day 29 and she says that if I get to day 45 she will induce a period and then start the clomid. However, I've been doing a lot of research and some women have irreversible vision damage as a result of clomid use. Has this happened to anyone before? Did the issues correct themselves when you stopped usage of the drug? Am I being too paranoid?
Re: Clomid vision side effects
I didn't have any long term effects and nothing with my vision. I started with a low dosage and increased each month.
Good luck to you!

I definitely had visual side effects. The first time I took Clomid, I saw a lot of flashing lights and spots. It was weird. They lasted until after my period stopped (cycle didn't work.. I actually did two 5 day rounds of Clomid in this cycle do to not responding). The second time I took Clomid, I saw the same flashes and lights pretty much immediately and then I woke up one morning and had wavy lines. I've never done drugs but I can only imagine that's what it might be like. It was super scary. I called the RE immediately and was told to stop the Clomid and that I couldn't ever take it again due to risk of permanent visual damage. Because we stopped the cycle short, I never ovulated. Visual stuff is scary. I will say all of mine finally resolved after my period came. The visual stuff did last the entire cycle though so it's not like it stopped after I quit taking the 5 days of Clomid.
That said, (and this is important), my understanding is that visual side effects are VERY rare with Clomid so I wouldn't stress about it right now. I can really only remember one other person who had visual stuff too. The vast majority of women take it and have no visual side effects. (Just the usual hot flashes, mood swings, and "Clomid Crazies"!) It's a great med and works for a lot of people just fine (heck, I am a Clomid baby!) but you just have to not only be monitored by your doc with ultrasounds and bw, but also self monitor your side effects.
If you're still really worried about it, maybe ask your doc about Femara instead? I have done several cycles with that (plus injectables) and had basically no side effects.
Good luck!!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.
I would make sure you request at least a baseline sono and then a few days after you finish the course of Clomid, get another to monitor follicle growth.. You can still use OPKs, but they need to monitor at least minimally to make sure you're not over stimulating or not responding at all. In my case, I stalled out and didn't respond to the first dose so I had to do a second dose in that same cycle. On the other end of the spectrum, there are some women who are sensitive to it and over respond on low doses and have too many follies. I don't think you want quadruplets!
Sorry, I'm just very passionate about monitoring during medicated cycles, even if only minimally!
I hope this cycle is successful though and you don't need to go on any medication
