I opened up my ROTH IRA this week and fully funded it today. We contributed $2500 to DH's ROTH. Our financial advisor advised us to fully fund mine since women tend to live longer and will need more income in retirement. We will try to fully fund both for 2015.
We also heard back from our accountant and it was best for us to file separately to save about $600 on our state taxes. We will have a refund of $7,000 for the Federal and our small state refund will be cancelled out by the taxes we owe to various towns in the area. Our accountant is worth every penny, there is no way we could have figured this out ourselves! We will ask our accountant about our tax withholdings, most of our refund stems from a lot of charitable donations and the writing off of business expenses for DH's freelancing so we don't want to cut it too close.
This refund means we can pay for our new HVAC in cash without draining our savings! I think we will funnel the additional refund into 2015 ROTH contributions or paying down a chunk of our HELOC, depending on what DH wants to do.
