Re: WTF Wednesday

  • I think I mentioned that my ortho doc wanted me to try an ultrasonic bone stimulator to speed healing to my foot. Well, we have a high deductible insurance plan (normally, we're healthy people and don't use much of our insurance), so even with all the foot stuff we haven't met the deductible yet. I figured the bone stimulator would be a few hundred dollars....the bone stimulator guy calls me and tells me that it's going to cost $2000 out of pocket!?!?

This lovely device apparently increases healing by 30%, but that bone is growing back at about 1mm a month...so 30% would get me 1.3mm a month. Plus, I read the science section of the company's website and it seemed like some questionable science. So not worth $2000!  I told the guy um, thanks but no thanks!

I used to work in medical billing for a bone growth company.  By chance is it manufactured by DJO?
  • No, it's made by Exogen. I have seen bone stimulators for a few hundred on Amazon...I was going to ask my Dr if those are legit. $200 is much more reasonable than $20000! Also, I started physical therapy for the ankle yesterday and my therapist is trying to increase circulation to that bone by massage, so we'll see if that helps.

  • I'm with @ramstein1027 about WTF work.  My class is driving me up the wall.  I told them that starting Monday I am calling in sick for the rest of the year and the horrible sub in the class upstairs is taking over.  They are almost in tears, but still driving me nuts.  Not sure what will happen when I show up on Monday though.
  • WTF Life - can chill for 1 second?!  (sorry about vagueposting, I'm working on an update)
