NMMR: pets

I'm really struggling to focus today. H is contacting our vet today to discuss our cat's health and likely pick a day to "let him go." Our cat is 9 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes in October. He does not respond to insulin. He was also informally diagnosed with feline cushings disease. The full diagnosis and surgery was quoted to be a few thousand dollars and not very successful so we opted not to do it. We've been accommodating him as much as possible: Rx food, medications when needed, vet appts for check ups and blood work. He has neuropathy in his back legs and it's getting worse. He's still so cuddly and sweet. His personality is awesome. He just needs a new body.

Sorry for the long rant. This is the first furbaby H and I have had together, just after getting engaged.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your cat's health turning to the worse!  Those are such heart breaking decisions to make and you all have my sympathies.  It sounds like you all have given him a wonderful, happy life.
  • I'm so, so sorry! I can't imagine what you must be going through. I agree with PP that it sounds like you've given him an amazing life.
  • My heart breaks for you... I am so sorry you're going thru this. Thoughts out to the little guy and your family.
  • Aw, that is so sad. Sorry to hear this. Hoping he can stay comfortable for a little while....
  • Thank you for all the kind words.  We love him very much which is why we don't want him to suffer.  I think the worst part is trying to figure out "when is the right time."

  • I'm so sorry to hear this.  H and I are both incredibly attached to our cat (she's our first as well), and I can't even imagine what that decision must be like.

It sounds like your cat has had a wonderful life in a very caring home!

  • So sorry to hear this, many hugs being sent your way. I don't know how we'd ever make a decision like this with our animals. My mom is currently dealing with an aging cat (she's 19), who was my cat as a child. she takes it one day at a time, as long as the cat is eating, using the litter box most of the time, and interested in snuggles, it's a good day. right now she thinks that as long as the cat is interested in eating she's doing ok.
