I'm considering purchasing a roomba vacuum...$500 price tag is the best deal I've found for the ones highly rated for pet hair.
basic house chores like vacuuming have been one of the biggest things H and I get into little spats about, since we decided he was not taking on a second part time position and was instead going to share more of the housework. He has been phenominal helping with other things, but the vacuuming just seems to fall at the bottom of his list all the time, so it doesn't get done, and doesn't get done, and doesn't get done, then I end-up doing it angrily on friday night or saturday morning. I'm particular about having a clean house, I've already taken the laundry back from him because there were too many spats about how to do laundry. I'm trying to balance getting the house properly cleaned and not wanting to spend an hour after work every day and most of my saturday cleaning.
We have 2 cats and a dog who is a "daily shedder" the house really needs a good pass with a vacuum every other day to keep things under control, I vacuumed saturday I can already see a build up of dog hair on the wood floors and the area rug in the living room. I'm beginning to wonder if that $500 might be worth-it for a cleaner house and fewer times of me coming home to be disappointed that the vacuum never got run. I'm not sure that a roomba can do a good thorough cleaning of everything, but I wonder if it might just help with the mid-week upkeep until I can get my hoover out on the weekend.

Re: speaking of automated tasks!
I absolutely LOVE my Roomba; we are actually on our 3rd one because they do eventually wear out but even with the high price tag they have been soooooo worth it. We have hardwood floors and two big dogs (not big shedders, but still). The Roomba picks up way more on a daily basis than our regular vacuum does. We have to use regular vacuum or broom to get into corners and small spaces, but other than we just leave everything up to Roomba. I have a programmable one so it just cleans every day at 10am while we are at work and we come home to a clean house. I seriously think everybody should own one of these.
It takes a little bit of learning to discover what things it might get stuck on and where cords are and stuff like that, but once you get that figure out it's a breeze!
This makes me want a Roomba so badly.
It would be worth it while we are both busy with work and school. We should vacuum two or three times a week but we only do on Sundays. Hopefully in the next year or so I will be a SAHM. I honestly couldn't swallow a purchase like that if I am going to be home.

The Roomba really is pretty awesome. I think you'd love it. We have a much older, cheaper version of it and it cuts way down on the vacuuming.
Unfortunately, my cat is merely afraid of it and runs away. As such, she has not become a You Tube viral sensation...we have not been offered endorsement deals from Friskies...and I still have to work for a living.
