speaking of automated tasks!

I'm considering purchasing a roomba vacuum...$500 price tag is the best deal I've found for the ones highly rated for pet hair.

basic house chores like vacuuming have been one of the biggest things H and I get into little spats about, since we decided he was not taking on a second part time position and was instead going to share more of the housework.  He has been phenominal helping with other things, but the vacuuming just seems to fall at the bottom of his list all the time, so it doesn't get done, and doesn't get done, and doesn't get done, then I end-up doing it angrily on friday night or saturday morning. I'm particular about having a clean house, I've already taken the laundry back from him because there were too many spats about how to do laundry. I'm trying to balance getting the house properly cleaned and not wanting to spend an hour after work every day and most of my saturday cleaning.

We have 2 cats and a dog who is a "daily shedder" the house really needs a good pass with a vacuum every other day to keep things under control, I vacuumed saturday I can already see a build up of dog hair on the wood floors and the area rug in the living room. I'm beginning to wonder if that $500 might be worth-it for a cleaner house and fewer times of me coming home to be disappointed that the vacuum never got run. I'm not sure that a roomba can do a good thorough cleaning of everything, but I wonder if it might just help with the mid-week upkeep until I can get my hoover out on the weekend.

Re: speaking of automated tasks!

  • My parents have one, and my mom likes it.

If nothing else, it super entertains the cat.  Every time he hears the starting music, he comes over to investigate and chase it around.

It does have a tendency to bump into things, so if you have valuable furniture or fragile items somewhere, you might want to keep it out of those rooms.

It doesn't eliminate the need to vacuum completely, but my mom says her vacuuming has been cut in half since buying it.

  • Yea, I'm figuring I'll probably still have to run my regular vacuum once a week. nothing we own is super valuable, H is definitely not gentle when he runs the vacuum. I think I'm going to start stashing a little aside to buy one, it just seems worth coming home to a clean house and not being upset with H.

  • I have one. I freaking love it. We run it every day. We only have hardwoods, no rugs and no pets. If you do it daily, I can't imagine why you'd need to vacuum otherwise. I will say that it has caused scuffs on furniture legs and on some of the baseboards, but it's never broken anything and if it sucks up things like socks, it just shuts off.

  • Also, are you buying at pet specific version? Because I know ours was closer to $300 plus we were able to use a 20% of coupon from Bed Bath and Beyond.

I'm looking at the 870 for pets and allergies it has the hepa filter and it's suppose to navigate around furniture better.
Edit: the battery is also suppose to last better. by friend who has an older one says she always finds somewhere with a dead battery (usually under her couch).

  • I'm also thinking that with a baby on the way, vacuuming is probably going to end-up lower on my list than I'd like as the year goes on.

  • I absolutely LOVE my Roomba; we are actually on our 3rd one because they do eventually wear out but even with the high price tag they have been soooooo worth it.  We have hardwood floors and two big dogs (not big shedders, but still).  The Roomba picks up way more on a daily basis than our regular vacuum does.  We have to use regular vacuum or broom to get into corners and small spaces, but other than we just leave everything up to Roomba.  I have a programmable one so it just cleans every day at 10am while we are at work and we come home to a clean house.  I seriously think everybody should own one of these.

It takes a little bit of learning to discover what things it might get stuck on and where cords are and stuff like that, but once you get that figure out it's a breeze!

  • This makes me want a Roomba so badly.

It would be worth it while we are both busy with work and school. We should vacuum two or three times a week but we only do on Sundays.  Hopefully in the next year or so I will be a SAHM. I honestly couldn't swallow a purchase like that if I am going to be home.

Yea, I'm still wrestling with the price.  I could go with an older model with fewer features, and/or buy a used one and save $150-225, but I'm usually of the mind set that if I'm going to save the money and make the purchase I'd rather spend a little extra if it means better functionality or less maintanence.

I will not be staying at home, my job accounts for 70% of our take-home, and even if H were in a position to stay home, so far he's proven that running the vacuum wil always be the last thing on his list.

  • The Roomba really is pretty awesome.  I think you'd love it.  We have a much older, cheaper version of it and it cuts way down on the vacuuming.

Unfortunately, my cat is merely afraid of it and runs away.  As such, she has not become a You Tube viral sensation...we have not been offered endorsement deals from Friskies...and I still have to work for a living.

I think the cats would probably not care about it, however I expect that the dog would think it was some kind of threat that needs to be destroyed...I'll have to crate her until I know what she thinks of it.

I think I've convinced myself this purchase is getting made...H joked I should put it on the baby registry when we make one...I think that's a big stretch of "baby needs"

I have two kiddos and work 4 days a week. If I were a SAHM, I'd still consider it! They days are still busy and I'd rather spend time with the kiddos than vacuum. :)
