Prenatal vitamins?

we are looking to start trying this August/September. I went off birth control last week and started a fertility friend account to start tracking my period/ovulation data. My question is should I start taking prenatal vitamins now or wait? Is there anything else you think is important to do or not do a few months out from when you know you are going to start ttc?

I have also seen some people say that you don't need to change anything until you know you are pregnant. I'm a little confused and would like some I out from ladies with experience. Thanks!

I would start now, it certainly won't hurt.  I love prenatal vitamins so much (great for hair and nails) that I kept taking them after we stopped trying!

  • Now is a good idea. From what I understand, it is good to at least take a folic acid supplement starting several months before you start TTC.

I personally started taking prenatals in January with the plan of starting TTC in May, having heard that taking them is recommended a few months in advance of conception.

You'll want to find a vitamin with folic acid and DHA. I've been taking the Rainbow brand, but they're pretty pricy. My H has also been taking a daily multi-vite from Costco.

I've also cut back on alcohol consumption (but will still have maybe two or three glasses of wine a week), as well as switched from Advil to acetaminophen and always Google any OTC meds before taking them. I haven't cut back on caffeine yet but I have been trying to drink more water.

It maybe overkill, but none of this behavior hurts!

  • I would start taking PNVs now. I changed some of my eating habits and exercise habits just to get healthier in general. Some people say, "Drink 'til it's pink".

  • I would start the prenatal now. I started about 3 months out.

Also I started to attempt to lose weight/eat healthier a few months back as well. I drink a few times a year and will continue to do so until I am actually pregnant.

    Good luck!

  • It wouldn't hurt anything to start taking them now. I get mine from Costco. The gummy ones are also great if you hate swallowing pills.

As for lifestyle changes, it's always a good idea to eat healthy and exercise, TTC or not. I'm also in the "drink til it's pink" camp assuming you aren't out getting plastered every night.

    Good luck!

  • Ditto what everyone else said, won't hurt to start now.
  • Thanks everyone. Looks like I need to go shopping.
  • I've read that it's good to have the vitamins in your systems at conception.  I hope to start TTC in August/September so I just started taking PNV this cycle.
