Allergy Testing for 4mo

Hi Ladies. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this...I tried posting on the Allergy and Parenting board on TB, but it seems slow and I didn't get any response, so I thought maybe I would try here and see if anyone has any info that can help. My son is 4mo and is EBF. He has reflux and eczema (both pretty bad). I'm new to all of this bc my DD never had any issues eating or skin related. I've had 3 dr's and a specialist (Derm) tell me it is NOT dietary related, however I did cut out most dairy when he was 1mo bc he had really bad gas and that did help. We are to the Dr constantly for either the reflux or the eczema. He had really bad cradle cap that was oozing, it has since cleared/dried up, but he still scratches at his head SOO bad he bleeds. We have tried everything. For the reflux we had him on Zantac, Prevacid, Pepcid and now he's on Prilosec...the pepcid seemed to help the most. For his skin, we have tried aquaphor, Cerave, Cetaphil, Gold Bond Eczema and he screams bloody murder for all of them. The only thing that he doesn't scream with is Aveeno or Vaseline Eczema cream. He has steroid ointment we are weaning and a medicated shampoo for his cradle cap. I am at a loss. I just don't know what else to do. So we decided to get him allergy tested on Friday. Just wondering if anyone on here can give me any info to prepare me. Has anyone taken their child that has reflux and eczema and NOT had any allergies? I am pretty much bracing myself for the worst. I have read up on how the testing is done, I guess I'm just looking for personal stories about the results and how you dealt with them. I just want my poor baby boy to feel better.

Re: Allergy Testing for 4mo

  • Well, he sounds like me at 4 months old.  My parents had me at the doctor at least once a week from 2 months to 18 months.  I was a mess.  I didn't have skin issues or reflux, but I had constant ear infections, pink eye, bronchial infections, and upper respiratory infections.  I had pneumonia at 6 months old for the first time.

Finally my mother insisted on allergy testing at 18 months old.  The pediatrician never agreed, so she just took me to an allergy doctor.  By 18 months old I was allergic to: citrus, soy, dairy, mold, dust, and the amount of pollens that I was allergic to was shocking to every doctor who looked at that test.  They thought it wasn't possible to be so off the charts allergic to something that I had literally only been exposed to once in my life.  My mother took me off of the foods I was allergic immediately, but the environmental issues were harder to deal with.  My body was so destroyed- I had a terrible immune system and my gut was so bad I kept creating new allergies to new foods.

Around 2 years is when my mom started moving in a more natural direction.  She was so ahead of her time.  No one thought of "natural medicine' in those days.  Naturopathic medicine quite literally saved my life.  It took a couple years of work, but my gut healed, my immune system finally got stronger, and my reactions to the environmental allergies became very manageable.

In the natural medicine world, they believe that all eczema is caused by allergies.  I'm not sure about reflux in babies, but I don't understand how they can rule out diet.  They're pulling that out of their asses as a wild guess because they can't possibly know that.  are you breastfeeding or does he have formula or both?  Doctors often believe if the baby is 100% having breast milk that there is no way they could be allergic to that, but they 100% can.  You can be allergic to ANYTHING.  He could be allergic to foods you are eating or even the composition of the milk.

You are doing the right thing.  Keep trusting your gut and don't let any doctor push you around.  You are the mother and you will always know best for your child.
  • I don't really have much advice, but as far as the cradle cap, my LO had that at one point and our pediatrician told us to rub olive oil on her head, then wash her hair with ORIGINAL Head & Shoulders. It helped to clear it up within a few weeks. As far as the exzema, have you considered giving your LO an infant probiotic? Our pediatrician recommends giving babies this and it can help with a number of things - digestion, exzema, etc. It might be something worth looking into for your son. But yes, take him to an allergist too and get him checked out - it could be any number of things causing his issues.

And btw, about the other board...I've never posted on there, but I do know that a majority of the core members jumped ship and started another board. Not quite sure what happened to cause the mass exodus as I was only a casual lurker. There is a parenting section on here too though and the ladies there are very helpful - GP Moms ;)

Yes, yes, and yes!  Probiotics are going to be a huge part of the healing process, but until you find out the cause of the symptoms, the probiotic will only act as a band aid.
