Long Weekend - Plans?

It's only Wednesday and I have zero focus today at work thinking about the holiday weekend.

What's everyone doing this weekend?

Re: Long Weekend - Plans?

  • My parents are coming into town. H and I are looking to do some yard work - taking a small tree out, putting something else there, etc. Lots of flowers to plant as well as our small garden.

  • H and I are both on vacation Friday-Monday. We're going to be tourists in our own city, since once we leave here, we're not likely to come back and do the tourist-y stuff. It should be a good time, and these are the only 4 days we'll see each other this month.
  • 1 wedding to play on Friday, 2 weddings to play on Saturday so I plan on relaxing and spending time with family the rest of the weekend.

  • No major plans at all.  H has a golf tournament he's in on Saturday, so I'll probably get things done around the house.  Sunday we're loading up the smoker with a bunch of meat and having a couple of friends over.
Then Monday we have no plans.  Which we've decided means we're either vegging out and spending time with our daughter, or we'll all load up and head off somewhere for lunch or hiking or something.

I don't normally take it off (we have a PTO system that doesn't include holidays, just a lump sum of days off) but I'm going to this year. We don't have big plans, just get our house and yard back together after being gone for two weeks! And we'll probably see both families, who all live relatively close.

  • My aunt and uncle are coming out from Cali to visit for 6 days starting today so we will be spending a lot of time at my parents which is where they are staying. Other than that probably packing some more boxes. Picnic on Monday at my parents while H is working 16 hours for double time and a half! Whoop!
  • It's GRADUATION weekend! I am so sad and so happy all at once. The campus will be empty by 4pm on Saturday and then H needs to finish grading and I have to finish up and clean out my desk. We don't have any fun plans but that is okay, we have 3 months of summer!

I worked for a company a few years ago that switched to this kind of system.  I thought it was great.  More flexibility in when you took days off.  But surprisingly, most of the other employees HATED it.  Whenever a holiday was approaching, they would constantly complain about how "we didn't get any holidays".  And I would point out, "Noooooo...we have just as much time off, except now we don't HAVE to use it for specific holidays."  They understood it logically, but just didn't seem to get it emotionally.

With that said.  What long holiday?  Oh yeah.  Memorial Day.  The day everybody else gets off and I don't, lol.  My company trades it for Mardi Gras.  Which, I understand.  Except we should have both off because we already don't get that many holidays.  For example, we don't get President's Day or MLK Day either.

My work holidays are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, surprisingly the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve day.

I'm with you - I LOVE this system.  I think right now, I think I get some where between 32-34 days a year all for holidays, vacation and short-term illness.  (I have more time for long-term illness, but have to take two PTO days first for a single illness before tapping into that.)  In the last 14 months, I've taken 3 separate two week long vacations, sold 40 hours for extra cash and still taken the occasional holiday or day off whenever I feel like a break.  It's awesome!!

  • H and I's biggest hobby is boating. It's 100% not MM at all, but I'm convinced the kid has it in his blood. So we'll be spending the weekend on our boat. :) We have some friends meeting us out on the water and coming along with us. It should be a fun time!

I'm so excited for a long weekend! Saturday I'm working a dive class and then I have no further plans. Realistically, however, I should do some work at home on Monday.

At some point I want to get my raised beds set up. I have lots of warm weather veggie starters inside and can't decide when to put them out. I should probably wait a week or two but keeping them happy inside is getting annoying.
  • I took Friday off work because I have a wedding cake to finish decorating and deliver that afternoon.  I didn't realize it was Memorial Day weekend when I took it off though.

Saturday is our 6-year anniversary, yay!  I think we are going to go shopping for a new dresser as an anniversary gift.  We have been using a tiny kids-size dresser for about 10 years, so it's about time we get what we want.  If we can't find what we want locally, we might drive to Denver over the weekend (6 hours).  We are leaving for vacation May 30th so we didn't plan anything big for this weekend.

Re PTO: We have the kind of system where we just have a lump sum of PTO to use for holidays, vacation days, sick days, etc.  I love the system; however, since I work at a bank we don't get the option of taking holidays off or not since we are closed those days.

  • I'm taking friday off to catch-up around the house. then I'm off to my hometown for the weekend for a sunday bridal shower.

  • Friday: I'm working all day, then heading home to clean anything I need to clean before we meet with the realtor to sign our Purchase and Sales Agreement.

Saturday: I'm selling bows at a Yard Sale Extravaganza all day.

Sunday: Relaxing as of right now. We might go out somewhere.

Monday: Spending time with my H and DDs.

  • Going to an OOT wedding saturday where DH's dad lives, so lunch with him and his wife before the evening wedding. DH wanted to stay at a hotel instead of over night with his dad, so that will be a nice treat. Then another couple hours drive sunday to visit DH's mom/step-dad and a memorial day hang out with some more family.

I was kind of dreading the wedding because I didn't really have anything to wear, but the other day I found a Lauren Conrad dress at Plato's Closet for $8. I won't know anyone at the wedding and I've got some pretty bad social anxiety, so feeling good in my outfit will help a bunch.
  • Sounds like you all have some fun plans!

The only thing we have planned is to go over to a friend's house on Saturday to help them build a playset for their daughter. I have a feeling it's going to mostly turn into the guys playing with power tools and us gals drinking mimosas but I'm looking forward to it.

Aside from that my in-laws are coming to visit next week and I've got a million things to do before they get here. Everybody decided to come visit us this summer so starting next week and going through mid July we're going to have house guests almost constantly (I think we have 2-3 days in mid June where we'll have the house to ourselves). I'm determined to enjoy my last quiet week before craziness takes over!

It's 4pm on Friday and I can't wait to leave work!! Everyone else is gone, and I've checked out. H is working studiously though, and he's my ride (we work at the same location and carpool).

We have my brother's grad party on Saturday, church and brunch for my parent's 35th anniversary on Sunday as well as entertaining my in-laws. Hopefully on Monday we'll be guest-free so we can actually have a day off. I'd like to take advantage of flower sales and do some gardening. But, plans for when the IL's leave aren't set in stone yet so TBD on that one...

All set to have a great weekend!

Today: Came to terms to settle a massive case with the IRS.  Trial was 2 weeks away, and I was literally starting to have nightmares about it.  I am NOT a litigator and the partner kept saying I was going to have to lead witnesses.... thinking about having to do that was giving me a ton of anxiety. So coming to an agreement with them was a massive weight off!  To celebrate I left work early and hit up DSW to find shoes for a wedding I'm in next weekend.  I scored exactly what I wanted for $13!  Then I got home and discovered that the tile samples I ordered on Monday had been delivered for our backsplash, so I'm having fun with that.  Tonight is also pizza night!

Tomorrow: Our new appliances are being delivered in the morning, and we plan to work on doors most of the day.

Sunday & Monday: More door rehabbing and enjoying the weather.  It's supposed to be in the 80's and sunny most of the weekend - absolutely perfect.  We might get BBQ or something for dinner on Monday.
