NMMR: Second Interview Attire

I just left a great interview and they are trying to schedule me to come back to meet with some other department members.  The second interview could be as early as tomorrow!

I only have one suit that fits and if I got get another suit ($$$) I wouldn't have time to get it hemmed and even when I buy petite pants I almost always need the jacket sleeves hemmed.

My current suit is a plain black suit, I'm thinking that if I wear a different shirt, different shoes and different accessories that no one will probably notice that it is the same suit.  Am I right?

This is a large banking firm, dress code is business casual from what saw today (slacks, summer sweaters, flats, blouse and cardigan, etc.).

  • Congrats!

I cannot imagine anyone would notice. Maybe add a headband or scarf or something if you really want to make sure they don't think about it. Another option I sometimes have used for interviews (when my pants don't quite fit right lol) is to pair a business-y dress with my suit jacket. Add some hose and dressy shoes and you're good.

    Good luck!
  • I agree. No one will really notice and accessorizing differently will just make it that much better.

    Good luck!

  • Excuse me for being sexist here for a moment, lol.  The men...no.  The women...maybe, but probably not.

What also sounds good on this issue is I'm getting the impression you'll be spending the majority of your time with different people than during the first interview anyway.

And congrats on the acing that first one :).

  • @simplyelise If I had some professional looking dresses I would go that route, but I've put on some weight over the winter and my last job I could wear jeans to work every day.  Plus I'm not as comfortable in skirts (chub rub and having to make sure I keep my knees together). My wardrobe is seriously lacking at the moment.  :(

@short+sassy (how do we tag you properly anyway?1?)  The majority of the second interview will mostly be with people I didn't meet today, so you are right.  The only repeat is likely the person who will be making the hiring decision.

Haha...apparently I am only half tagable.  If hindsight were 20/20, I guess I should have gone with shortnsassy instead of short+sassy.

Agreed that nobody will notice.  Black suits are really versatile, and if you go with a completely different style shirt (ie: a shell instead of an oxford) plus different accessories, nobody will notice.

Is the person making the hiring decision a man or woman?

    Congrats on the call-back!

A woman.  Almost the whole department is female except one man who works in Florida.  lol

Well make a point to go with a completely different color palette, and she still shouldn't notice.  I know I wouldn't.

  • Given that your suit is black, I think you're good with changing up your accessories. Good luck!!
  • A different shirt/shoes/accessories is what I would do too!  Good luck, fingers crossed for you!
  • I wouldn't notice unless it was literally exactly the same outfit. or if someone spilled food on their jacket then wore the same jacket with food spilled on it the next day haha
  • I also think that if you wore different shirt and accessories no one would notice.  I've never owned a suit so you are already ahead of me :)

I feel ya! I don't know who decided pencil skirts should come back, but I do know that person has chicken legs. Hope things go well today!
  • The second interview is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.  By then no one will remember what I wore yesterday.  :)
