I think I've mentioned that H and I are dream shopping an international trip for next spring (that we'll only actually book once our e-fund is back up to snuff and my retirement contributions are where they should be). Spending a sick holiday researching fare options, I stumbled upon WOW airlines, an Icelandic carrier that just started flying out of Boston and Washington D.C. Their prices are unreal! It is the Spirit model where you need to pay for any extras, including water and carry ons over 11 pounds. In contrast to Spirit, however, they give off a friendly and upbeat vibe and don't seem to hate their customers. The baggage fees are reasonable, and this could really change the availability of European travel for us. It looks like we could fly to Amsterdam, which is currently high on our wishlist, for around $1,350 (including one checked bag). Really the only con is that they don't have daily flights to Amsterdam, so we'd need to go Thursday-Friday, which I find slightly awkward. Our next cheapest option that doesn't involve a 30 hour layover in Turkey is Icelandair, which would be around $1,900. We still may go that way since blizzards are a risk during the month we need to travel, and rebooking will be easier on a an airline with daily flights. I've done the math and we don't really charge enough to get a European ticket out of the big credit card sign-up bonuses, so I am definitely tempted by this bargain.
If you're planning a trip to Europe, I would definitely check these guys out, even if you need to use another airline to get to one of their U.S. hubs. The savings are massive!
Re: PSA: WOW Airlines
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind! I had a friend who was in the Navy...traveled all over the world...and she said one of her all time favorite cities was Boston. She said it is a beautiful city and there is so much to do there.
I've also heard they are one of the few cities with potholes that can rival ours here in NOLA. I guess that's what we get for both being old port cities built on shifty ground, lol.
