Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

Hello, I am a regular on Money Matters, but decided to start posting here as well. I hope I'm welcomed
:)

Anyway, my husband and I have not been able to get pregnant for the last 4 years or so (in the up until now it was more of just not preventing). Now, we are really wanting to try and are beginning some of the testing. I am supposed to get an HSG soon and I was researching it and it looks like there is the possibility of damage/pain. Has anyone on here done this test? What should I expect?

Re: Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

  • A lot of girls here have gotten this test done. It can be painful, but it isn't always. Mine was not painful, but I did bleed extremely heavily for a month after. I'm still unsure if that was caused by the HSG or not.

Anyway, welcome to the board and I wish you the best of luck in your journey! Hopefully, it isn't too much longer and you get some answers soon!
  • Mine was not particularly painful. It caused discomfort, but not paIn.

  • Mine hurt. To the point that I almost passed out.

But I am a huge baby when it comes to pain, so take that with a grain of salt.

  • It's so different for everyone really. I have a very high pain tolerance and my HSG was absolutely awful. I swore I'd never do it again. I really think that I'm in the vast minority though. Both of my tubes were blocked though so that's why mine was so dreadful. Well, that and an overly aggressive doc that was trying reeally hard to either unblock the tubes or just kill me lol. :) I had surgery to unblock the tubes (which was a piece of cake compared to the HSG! A couple years ago I had a saline one done and had no pain whatsoever, so while that is different, it's similar and makes me think all of my pain was due to the blockages. Good luck!!

  • Mine was very painful, but I also had a blocked tube, so I'm sure that factored into it.

  • I've had two, and thought it was pretty uncomfortable both times. I also had some mild cramping for a few hours, but I think the pre-medicating with Ibuprofen was definitely helpful. I'd recommend the same for you.

  • I forgot to add.. even though mine was AWFUL, the time I was in pain was very minimal. Only when they were pushing the dye. So it was like 10 seconds here, 30 seconds here, etc. Not like 15 minutes of intense pain! The entire thing from the time I walked into the room, was prepped, had the test, and was out the door was probably 15-20 minutes max. And as soon as the test was over, I felt fine, in that I had no more pain. I may have had very minimal cramping, but I don't remember for sure. I know I went shopping afterwards!! I did spot for a good week though. Not heavy, but not light... so make sure you take a pad with you!

So anyway, all that to say, even if yours is bad, it's not going to be like 15 minutes of solid pain! I'm hoping yours is easy peasy though :)
