Getting the Best Deals

Between playing credit card rewards, coupons, web portals, and such how do you try to get the biggest bang for your buck when planning activities/vacation. I'm trying to make when the kids get down as affordable and fun as humanly possible.

Re: Getting the Best Deals

  • I don't play with credit card rewards because we don't have any cards, but I love browsing Groupon to see if I can find any cheap things to do.

Another option is to search for local parks around the area and see if they have any walking trails.  Most have them posted as their level of intensity.  When we're entertaining guests we will pack lunches and head for the trails.  It takes a good chunk of the day, is free, and wears out the kiddos.

My kids are older now, but when they we were small and watching our dollars -  we did not spend money on entertainment.
A trip to a local park/playground (or State park if one is near by) - someplace with with swings, sand and assorted outdoor play equipment etc.  We had many hikes and picnics with roasted hotdogs and smores, - good old fashioned fun.
Sidewalk chalk drawings in the driveway, blowing bubbles, run thru the sprinkler on the lawn. Hop scotch/ jump rope, take a neighbor's dog for a walk - get creative.  Fun does not need to cost money!
Set up a "tent" outdoors - (does not have to be a real tent - just some shelter - can be old blankets hung by a fence or clothes line etc) Older kids love to tell or read scarey stories in a tent - young kids just enjoy being inside the enclosure to look at books, do simple puzzles,
At night - go outside and look at the stars - find the big dipper, orion and other basic constellations

Make cookies(from scratch) - pizza, pudding, grilled cheese or other simple items - most kids love to cook.

  • Thank you for the ideas, I will use some as fillers. With them being a little older like they are and their first experience with Texas I want to make it different then what they do at home all the time. I don't want it to be just babysitting.

  • I guess to phrase my question better: I have plenty money saved up to pay full price for everything we will be doing, I am just wondering where to look and how to save as much as we can and/or get a little back later on.

If you do buy Groupons or Living Social coupons, you can still go through a portal to get additional money back. I checked mrrebates.com and they offer 6% cash back. If you need a referral, try http://www.mrrebates.com?refid=1047763

I agree with Groupon and Living Social - also check out Amazon Local.

  • In my state, libraries have free and discount passes to area attractions that you can check out. There's usually only 1-2 a day per attraction, and for something really popular like a zoo or aquarium you have to reserve in advance. It might be worth checking into with your library!
  • I second groupon and living social. You can usually find some good deals for local stuff to do! I also never knew libraries had coupons, I'll have to keep that in mind!
