Unpopular opinion - overrated books

Hi ladies,

Not to ruin any books, but I'm curious what book(s) you've heard rave reviews about that turned out to be just OK or really not that good? Two that come to mind for me are "The Giver" and "Gone Girl" No hard feelings if anyone else really loved whatever books get listed.

  • Interested to see how this turns out.  I feel like this hasn't ended well in the past...

  • On here, you'll get a resounding 50 Shades of Grey plus sequel plus sequel plus alternate viewpoint.

    Also, Breaking Dawn.

    Also, Allegiant.

All of these are HUGE bestsellers.... inexplicably.

  • Gone Girl for sure.  I just hated all the characters SO SO much, I couldn't enjoy the book.

    The Glass House.

    Room

    The Outsiders

The Grisha series (in fairness, I only read the first 2)

If I Stay (but I loved the second book)

  • Sorry I didn't realize this was already discussed. I must say I enjoyed Where She Went more than If I Stay and the 3rd Divergent book was awful. What a way to just blow the ending. I wait for the DVD with those movies, no sense in wasting money.

I am holding out hope that the Allegiant movie will be better than the book. Insurgent changed a lot in the movie version, and I actually liked it better than the book.

Yep, Outlander.  Read the first two to fully form my opinion and I just don't get the love.

The Husband's Secret.  I have liked her other books but this one didn't live up to the hype.

    The Goldfinch.

    Gone Girl.

The Raven Cycle series.  Enjoyable but not fantastic IMO.

Allegiant and Mockingjay were not strong endings to otherwise great series but I don't think that is unpopular.

I'm probably permanently getting kicked off the board now after these confessions.  ;)

There was such hype and I wanted to stab my eyes out while reading it.  Hated it.

  • I don't know about overrated, but there are lots of books that just aren't for me.

  • Yeah the very end of Mockingjay was a rip off. Not to spoil anything if anyone hasn't read it but my husband and I were both like "REALLY?!?"

Water for Elephants was terrible. I loved the movie, book says it was a best seller, then you read it and it's so dry. How was a movie better than a book? Has that ever been a topic books to movies better/worse or the same?

I guess the only good part of hyped up books that aren't that good is that it gets people to read.
