Safest car companies

I've been researching car companies mainly looking at safety. What car companies have some of the SAFEST cars under 35,000? I've been reading on different sites but I am getting more confused.

Look at the IIHS - it's the group the insurance people use to set your premiums.  They crash just about everything independently

The small overlap front test is the newest one, and it's the test that seems to give car companies the most trouble.

  • When H was researching cars back in the fall, he was looking primarily at safety and longevity. He consistently found that Honda and Toyota were among the safest cars on the road. He ended up purchasing a 2012 Toyota Rav4 with less than 20,000 miles on it for $16,000. His other choice was a Honda CR-V. Comparable safety, features, longevity and price.

That line cracked me up for some reason.  I instantly had a vision of a group of IIHS employees excited about crashing cars and calling for, "Crash the next one!"

But, good advice in general, call your car insurance company ahead of time whenever you are thinking of moving or buying a different car.  Either of those occurrences will usually change your rates, though sometimes for the better.

I moved from one zip code to the zip code right next to it.  Less than one mile away.  And my car insurance doubled!

  • I think that size of vehicle matters today too. While a small car may be safe if it has an accident with a car its size, or a tree, versus a large SUV or van or pick-up, it's probably not going to do as well with the larger vehicles.

Here in MN there are a ton more SUVs, trucks and vans than there are smaller cars. LOL. My DS's preschool line-up is 99% larger vehicles (literally). So, I wouldn't want to be that person in the small car when everybody else is up high and has huge autos that would crush mine in an accident.

I drove a Geo Metro..3 whole cylinders, my friends...in college and it had higher than normal insurance primarily because they are so small and fairly easy to "smush" in an accident.

Then again, I now drive a MINI Cooper which is at least as small if not smaller, and my insurance went down from my previous, older, and bigger 4-door coupe.  "Bigger" being a relative term, lol.
