Weekend Plans?

TGIF! What's going on this weekend?

Re: Weekend Plans?

  • Relax! I had to work an OOT event last weekend, and next weekend we have a big celebrity fundraiser that'll take up Friday night, all of Saturday and into Sunday morning, so I'm going to soak up this weekend.

On Saturday, we are meeting with the designer from the design/build company we've hired to remodel our bathroom to pick the finishes, vanity, tub and toilet, etc. Once we've done that we'll be able to set a date to start construction!!

  • Congrats Jessica! That's awesome!

I don't really have anything planned. Dh is out of town for work. There is an event going on at one of our favorite restaurants (bounce houses, etc) so I will probably take ds there Saturday. Other than that, maybe paint some furniture? I have to get all the projects out of my garage before baby.

  • Friday- Work until 5pm then downtown for an office camaraderie event.

Saturday- Weather permitting we have a hike and boating day around the lake planned followed by a 4-course dinner at a nice restaurant (thank you, Groupon!)

Sunday- Cleaning/organizing the house, grocery shopping and hopefully mani-pedi for me.

We're both working Saturday. Sunday we don't have anything planned, so just cleaning and grocery shopping. H will have an interview sometime in the next two weeks, so he'll be preparing for that. Hopefully then we find out if we're moving!
  • Congrats on the closing!

Well, today I'm having brunch with my mom who is in town. DH and my brother took off early this morning to go out. Tonight my dad gets into town so we'll probably go out to dinner with the parents.

Early tomorrow morning we're driving to Savannah to spend the weekend at the beach for my birthday. I've been wanting to go to Savannah ever since we moved to Atlanta a few years ago and haven't had the chance yet, so I'm excited!

    Have a great weekend everyone!
  • Tonight we're looking at a house out in the country, with 10 acres of timber, and a house 200 years newer than ours.  I'm so nervous but also excited.  Our dream is to live on something like that, but I'm not sure if it's the right time for us.  Guess we'll see.

Tomorrow is some much needed cleaning.  Our poor house has been neglected since I've gone back to work.

    Sunday is a birthday party.

  • Tonight we're going to Polish Fest with friends. Good friends, food, beer, polkas - should be a fun evening even though it's cool and rainy here.

Saturday we're having our immediate family over for our birthdays in the evening, which means during the day we'll be cleaning, grocery shopping, etc. Also, we have an insurance review in the morning. Hopefully we'll see a decrease in our car premiums due to our ages.

Sunday is open so far. Which I'm excited about.

  • Friday - cook out at sister's

Saturday Morning - we are both volunteering

Saturday Afternoon/Evening - Assemble new office furniture & start moving things into new office

  • Friday--H's mom and stepdad are in town, so we are having dinner with them

Saturday--H's sister got married in April and is having a reception tomorrow afternoon.  My niece also has her first Girl Scouts awards ceremony that night, so I might go to that if we are through at the reception.

All in all a very busy weekend!

  • @Xstatic3333 Do you mind if I ask how much you charge for a dive class or what some things to look for in a good class would be?

DH and I took one of those intro classes when we were on vacation but because DH got sick we didn't have enough time to get full certifications. We've been looking at a few places nearby that offer classes but I'm not sure how to go about picking one place over another. Thanks!

Not at all!  I work for a dive shop that sets prices for us, and I believe the full cost of certification at the shop where I work is around $600, plus you are required to buy some equipment (mask, fins, and snorkel) and rent the rest.  The shop where I work is in a wealthy community in metro-Boston, however, so cheaper prices can definitely be found in other parts of the country.

That said, cheaper isn't always better!  Here are some things to look for when choosing a shop:

    1) The shop should be a member of one of the major certification agencies, PADI, NAUI, SSI, and there a few other smaller ones.  PADI is the largest, and if you are hoping to do your pool work at home and then your ocean dives on vacation, it will be easiest to find a referral using a PADI shop.  Between PADI shops, a "5-star instructor development center" will have the most experienced staff, but many smaller shops are good, too.  PADI now has you do most of the classroom work online, which saves time, and in my opinion they have developed a very good system.

    2) Ask about ratios.  Classes are allowed to have up to 12 people in them, but in my opinion a class that large will be a lower-quality instructional experience.  My shop allows up to 8 in the pool and 6 in the ocean with one instructor and one dive master (an assistant-level rating).

    3) Go into the shop, talk to people, and ask questions.  Do you see signs of an active community that dives regularly?  Are they friendly and outgoing?  Even if you just want to dive on vacation, a very active dive shop will likely be a positive environment to complete your training with.

    4) Your "open water" dives, which will be in either an ocean, quarry, or lake, should take place over two days.  Some places do them all in one day, but that is exhausting and considered a standards violation.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any more questions or would like my opinion based on shop websites!  I always love to chat about diving.  An instructor I used to work with also just moved to Atlanta so I could see if he has any recommendations.

Thanks so much for all the tips! :)

When we took our intro course and first dive in Jamaica it was through PADI and we were kinda bummed that we weren't able to complete the full certification course because DH got sick (poor guy). We both really enjoyed it and I was thinking of gifting DH a certification class for his birthday or Christmas. Ideally I'd like to find a group that does trips or something so that we can dive more than just when we go on vacation, but I haven't done much research into that yet.

So I googled Atlanta scuba and looked at some websites and this shop caught my eye:

    http://www.seaventures.com/scuba/

I realize that Atlanta is a huge area and this place may not be near you, but it strikes me as an example of a good shop. I think it's nice that they take you to the Keys for your checkout dives. Diving in the ocean has more variables than diving in a lake and it's good to get that experience early with an instructor if possible. Plus, there's much more to see. The prices seem fair, although there's nothing MM about diving! It's worth it, though. Let me know if you sign up anywhere!
