AW: April's Master Bathroom Remodel

We met with our contractor today to talk over plans for our master bath remodel.  We are using the same contractor that did our kitchen, he did a fabulous job and we trust him with our house key (to the point that he still has the key from our kitchen remodel last summer) as he is a friend.  Very rough numbers have this costing us about $10,000 and we will be paying mostly cash and using our HELOC to make up any overages.

For this remodel I'm going to try really hard to focus on the BIG PICTURE of this project and not worry about incremental costs (within reason).  With our kitchen there were a few projects that we didn't do because they cost more money than we wanted to spend and I don't want to nickel and dime the master bathroom the same way.

Our master bathroom is HUGE, roughly 13 feet long by 10 feet wide (not including the closet, which is also massive).  Here are pictures of what it looks like now.

The door in the first picture is the water closet (toilet) and just out of the picture is another door to a narrow linen closet that is very awkward (deep and narrow).

The door in the second picture is the double doors into the closet.  It is about 5 feet wide by 10 feet deep and currently open air at the top to the bathroom and bedroom.

The window and toilet are the only things that we are keeping.  Everything else is going to be replaced and some things are moving.

We are adding heated floors and new tile, new vanity, new mirrors, eliminating the tub, expanding the shower, updating the lighting, changing the linen closet (possibly replacing it with linen cabinets), new doors, closing up part of the current closet door and adding a pocket door to give more wall space, new trim, closing up the "volleyball net" opening with drywall from the bathroom to the closet and with both drywall and glass from the bedroom to the bathroom (paying extra for glass to allow the light from the skylight to still pass into the bedroom).

Once this project is done we only have one more remodel in store and that is the guest bathroom and that will probably be a few years down the road.  Other projects are smaller (refinishing doors, new flooring etc) and we will be able to cash flow the expenses or save up the cost in a few months since they will be way cheaper than kitchen and bathroom remodels.

After this we will be turning our attention to the front curb appeal.  We have some peeling paint on the facade and we really need a new garage door and some landscaping.

Re: AW: April's Master Bathroom Remodel

  • Here are some inspiration pictures of features I want.

The color scheme is still highly tentative, but I want it warm, soft and fairly neutral colors.  The cabinet color is going to match our current trim color so it looks original to the house only way better.

    Awesome!

I'm obsessed with a hamper hiding place.  Our master is fine, but it's the one thing that super bugs me is that we don't have a logical place for a hamper... I HATE not having a place for a hamper, and H's clothes end up all over the floor until laundry day.

Also a fan of that color palette.  I like cool colors.  I find them calming.

  • Good luck with the remodel! I love the color palettes you picked. Making inspiration boards on Pinterest is one of my favorite past times, now if only we could find the right house to purchase lol.

I'm not sure "fun" is going to be the right word, but it will be worth it.

We also elected to put EVERYTHING in the hands of our contractor.  It was way to stressful to do our own demo and help him with the smaller projects (screwing in cement board, grout, etc).  We are just going to stay out of his way this time.  lol

  • Good luck! I'm jealous you can at least stay in your home. We're looking at two weeks in extended stay taking on a big extra cost to our budget!!

Oh that sucks. We should have looked into doing that with our kitchen remodel, it took almost 8 weeks. We did take a 4-day vacation during that time to get away, but that was a rough time. We just couldn't escape the mess due to the location of the kitchen and then we were limited to grilling and microwaving our meals.

haha, ok, maybe fun was the wrong word. We're gearing up for our own renovations I'm just antsy to be at the point where we have a yes or no from the bank and can move forward.

Me too!  That is one of the reasons I was so sick over the contract job ending after 3 weeks.  I had just gone to pick it all out and I wanted my new pretty bathroom!!!

  • Yay!

I personally love the oil rubbed bronze. And hearing that you've got that through the rest of the house makes me 100% in the bronze camp.
  • The stones are so awesome! Love your choices.
  • Very pretty! Love that accent tile!!

  • I'm another vote for oil-rubbed bronze!  I'm biased because that's what we have used throughout our house, but I just really love the finish.  Plus if that's what is in the rest of your house, I'm one that likes to see coordination throughout.

    Excited to see progress reports!!!

  • Nice choices, love it!
  • I think oil-rubbed bronze would go great with the colors and feel that you've picked out. I also love the geometric accent tile! Great selections.
  • Just wanted to chime in and say we have a similar color palette in our home (warmer greys etc) and we did ORB and it looks really nice.  I was doubtful since I always tend to go more modern if I had my choice (unfortunately H always goes way more rustic than I prefer), but the ORB really does look nice.
