Morbid thought about Authors

Do you think authors that have a long running series have any contingency in place incase they pass away before they've wrapped up their series?

I know the Dune Series was continued by Frank Herbert's son and Kevin J Anderson from notes he had made about the rest of the series.

What about JD Robb and the In Death Series? Obviously she's young and no one expects her to die anytime soon, but accidents happen everyday.

Just one of those things I think about and can't help but wonder if anyone else thinks of these things.

  • Diana Gabaldon is 63.  She probably has another 2-3 Outlander books to write, which would equal about anywhere between 6-12 years.  I hope diseases and illnesses don't run in her family.
    75 Books in 2015?

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • Stieg Larsson.
That series is supposed to be something like 10 books, right?  And he only got to write 3.

But he had them all outlined and someone else is now picking up the writing, so the series will continue.  It remains to be seen how the newer books are going to be, but time will tell.

    Nora Roberts is actually 65.

I know the wife of Robert Joran contracted with Brandon Sanderson to finish the Wheel of Time series. Toward the end of her life, Anne McCaffrey started working with her son to transition Pern to him.

I think some of them do.

But will the newer books have the appropriate number of mentions of coffee and sandwiches?!

  • The obvious wonder is George R. R. Martin....but I don't think he's giving anything away to anyone. He'd rather us suffer by not knowing the ending just like every character in his books ever....

Announcement - I remember my husband being on pins and needles from September to December. He was STRESSED. He'd started WOT in high school and was distressed at the notion of never knowing what happened to Rand & Co.

At least HBO knows how it ends.

I guess this is one consolation related to the TV series spoiling the end. And honestly, I'm not convinced that GRRM will ever tell us what happens to all of those side characters that didn't make it into the show. There are just too many open side stories for him to wrap them all up cleanly!

  • I hope Patrick Rothfuss also has healthy genes, because our luck, his next book won't come out until we are 65.

He has NO CLUE what he's going to do with the third book.  NO CLUE.
