Super Important Question...Duck...Duck...???

Did you play Duck, Duck, Goose? Or, did you play Duck, Duck, Grey Duck?

I grew up playing the first one, but some FB friends have informed me that I'm wrong and it's Duck, Duck, Grey Duck.

I don't care, just curious what you all played.

Re: Super Important Question...Duck...Duck...???

  • We played Duck, Duck, Goose. Never heard of Grey Duck before. Is it a regional thing?

I grew up with duck, duck, goose, but I am familiar with duck, duck, gray duck. It's the exact same game just different names. It is definitely a regional thing.
  • I grew up playing Duck, Duck, Goose....which my husband recently informed me is named so because Geese are mean AF and will chase you down.

He has some horrible stories about the mean "Ninja Geese" that used to live on grandparents land. They'd show up out of nowhere to chase off DH and his brothers whenever they went near their lake or even when they tried to feed them. Poor guy.

Geese are THE WORST. Agreed. One attacked me as a child and they are awful for water quality. When a nice lake goes green and mucky, they are frequently the culprit.
  • Goose!

And our apartment complex is riddled with geese. We live close the water pond/lake thing, so they hang out around our part of the complex. They just had goslings last month and the little ones were so cute at first, but now they're almost full geese :(. The geese are especially mean and territorial around the goslings, naturally.

Interesting!  For me it was also Goose.  I have never heard of Grey Duck.

Here is a fun quiz that will pinpoint where you are from based on what you call certain things and how you pronounce certain words:

    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html?_r=0

When you get to the end, give it a few minutes for your personal map to come up.

I grew up on in So. Cal. and lived the first half of my life there, but then moved to NOLA and have lived the second half of my life here.  My personal map definitely showed the strongest similarities to both of those areas.

  • Goose. But I was more of a 'Head's up 7-Up' fan.

  • Goose!

I was born, and now reside again, in California. However, I spent 7 years in Minnesota and 5 years in Wisconsin. My friends there played Duck, Duck, Grey Duck. I always assumed it was a MIdwestern thing! :)
  • @Maggie1202 that's interesting! I'm from WI and never heard Grey Duck, so I Googled it.

From Wikipedia: (take it for what it is!)
"Duck Duck Gray Duck" is a variant that is played by people in the U.S. state of Minnesota.

Matches your Minnesota connection! Mystery solved?

I just told H about this conversation and he suggested "Duck, Duck, Grey Goose" as a fun new drinking game B-)

Well, this explains it! I grew up in Ohio. And, have lived all over the place. DH grew up in Iowa. We both know the game as "Duck Duck Goose." We now live in MN and the FB friends who commented are Minnesotans.
