Gayle Forman, the YA author whose best-seller If I Stay was adapted for film last year, will write her first book for adults with Algonquin Books, EW reports exclusively. The novel, tentatively titled Bypass, will be published in fall 2016.
“After a decade of mining the young-adult experience, I was ready to turn my attention to marriage and motherhood. It felt like the time to write a novel starring people my own age,” Forman says in a statement.
Bypass, according to the publisher, centers on a seemingly perfect magazine editor, wife, and mother named Maribeth Klein, who suffers a heart attack, and is forced to rely on others for support. Unused to such vulnerability, Maribeth flees home, searching for her estranged birth mother, and hoping to find some answers along with her.

“You can have your wishes, your plans, but at the end of the day, it's out of your control"
- Gayle Forman
"People talk about escapism as if it's a bad thing... Once you've escaped, once you come back, the world is not the same as when you left it. You come back to it with skills, weapons, knowledge you didn't have before. Then you are better equipped to deal with your current reality."
