What did you think?

Are Lucan and Gabrielle a good match?

Is the Breed or the idea that there's a secret society of rich, fierce, blood thirsty/requiring alien all-male descendants believable? How about the special birthmark for the human women/breedmates?

Will you read any more of the series?

Potential sp, but if you read Black Dagger Brotherhood, how does it compare?

Re: PNR Discussion: Kiss of Midnight (sp)

  • To tell you the truth, I read this years ago and didn't do a re read, so I don't remember too much about Gabrielle and Lucan.  The impression I remember is that I typically don't like the MMC from the first of a series because they are SO alpha male.  It can be a little off-putting to me.  I tend to like the strong BAMF types, but a little less domineering.

To answer your other questions:  I didn't like the birthmark thing.  It seemed a bit hokey to me. I thought the alien thing was a little far fetched, but how can I discriminated when we are talking about vampires in general?  I like the secret society feel though.

I think I've read through 4 or 5.  I don't like them as much as BDB, I think the highest I've given them is 3 stars.

  • I thought this one was okay. I also read the second one, which I happened to like a little bit more, even though the main male character was even more alpha than in this one.

The immediate memory wipe is overused in the PNR genre. Although, I guess if you are going to have an alien vampire secret society, it is convenient for that, much like you said with the birthmarks. One thing that I always wonder is with these people who are practically immortal, why don't they help out the common folk more, like feeding the hungry and all that. Not saying there needs to be world peace, but it would be nice to see some sort of low-key global responsibility from these folks.

I think we have read at least one other book with a photographer as the main character and I still have to wonder realistically how they make a living, especially with their portraits of nature (or urban desolation).  I get that Gabrielle had connections, but it still seemed weird to me.

I thought the sexy times were decently written, even if the first scene was highly ethically questionable.

I'm undecided about reading any more.

    Potential BDB spoilers below.

I might pick it up again if the BDB is ever finished, since I do think there are really strong comparisons between the two, both being over-the-top alpha secret society vampire warriors. Although, with BDB, about half the time, there seems to be a love interest just as strong as the alpha male.
